A few friends and I are hoping to do a canoe camp somewhere in the NY/NJ area in a month or so, but I've had a tough time finding a good starting point! Most outfitters seem to want to rent you a canoe for a day trip, and I'd like to sleep under the stars.

What I'd like to do is rent a boat or two, load them up with a night's food, tents, gear, etc., paddle between 30 minutes and 3 hours - and camp at something preferably not near civilization. I have no problem with an established campsite, but I don't want to just paddle to a campground full of RVs and kids. I'm starting in the NYC area but am mobile and flexible. Suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated.

My palns are to leave from Henderson Lake to Duck Hole, my first thought was to either stay at Cold river No. 1 or 2 lean-to/tent site but then I figure we can push it futher before layign down camp and looking at Ouluska on the NPT or Northern lean-to/tent site No. 1 or 2. I noticed the Northern sites are close to the river

My question based on all of your experience which tent site should we stay at? We are looking to go June 8,9th. How long you think the hike is from the Henderson Lake parking area to the proposed campe sites, it looks like there isn't much elevation gain.

Thanks

My wife and I are visiting the Adirondacks for the first time next week, from 5/31-6/9; looking to car-camp and do some day hikes.

We don't really have a destination in mind, and dont mind doing some driving brtween campground and trailhead. Can anybody recommend one or two state campgrounds that are especially nice- i.e., rustic, scenic (on the water?), not too crowded- or that we should definitely avoid?

Same question about hiking routes- and we definitely shouldn't miss, or any we should avoid like the plague? For reference in the Whites our favorites tend to be around 10-12 miles, 3-4000'; steep and rugged are fine, and the less crowded the better. We prefer loops (and have mt. bikes) so if the loops don't quite close that's OK.

Oh yeah: what about the bears? How much of a nuisance are they in the drive-in camping areas?

Thanks in advance for any advice... And we look forward to returning the favor if/when any of you visit NH!
