Starting to plan my NEHH finish - I need the 6 peaks in Baxter. Let me know if you are interested. Somewhere between Labor Day and 9/15 (I would like to be in NH for Flags on the 48, however.)

This is not a fully fledged plan as yet, but I will be in Midcoast Maine over Memorial Day weekend and am hoping to hike a lot in the Camden Hills. If anyone is interested in joining me, I'd really like to get up Ragged and then over to Bald Mtn., but it would require a hiking partner and car spot over on Barnestown Rd. or bumming a ride back to Rte. 17, which I am not excited about doing. If this doesn't work out I'll figure out some loop or another or just string together as many shorter hikes in my days as I possibly can.

I'll also have my kayak with me, so I'm sure I'll have plenty to do in case the black flies in the woods make me want to take my own life ;). I'm also considering a full moon hike on the 25th somewhere in the Camden Hills, but it will depend on whether I feel I leave the dog I'll be pet-sitting for several hours in the crate. If any of this sounds interesting shoot me a PM.
Thanks :D

I am leading a trip and have two vacancies (one male & one female/each in a separate gender cabin)...any interest out there. This is not a backpack trip but a hiking trip. First we will explore Baxter State Park high points. Climb Katahdin from both sides. Also hike AT northbound from Abol Bridge to Katahdin. Primitive camping in cabins on Daicey Pond. Avoid the red tape that is required making reservations in Baxter and let me take care of arrangements.

Then we will do a 3 day/2 night quasi-backpack staying in lodges along the AT. Hike northbound on AT for 40 miles from JoMary Road to Abol Bridge. Must participate for entire trip. If this plan interests you and dates work...(Sept. 16-24), e-mail me for complete details.

Note: Must get in contact with me by Monday, May 6. Trip is strenuous. Aggressive hiking every day.

I'm eyeballing a trip out to the north cascades this upcoming late july/early august for a handful of climbs so it would be nice to test the waters on a climbing trip if that interests people. I'm pretty open-minded and realize everyone has different strengths so your skillset doesn't have to match up perfectly with mine.

A colleague of mine at Boston University is asking the public to submit observations of tree “leaf out” times this spring from across New England to better understand the impacts of climate change on plants and birds. I thought I would post the announcement on VFTT as I imagine some folks here might be interested in participating. Please see the message below for details:

Field Station Concordia and the New England Leaf Out Project have teamed up on a citizen science project to collect leaf out times. We are investigating the effects of climate change on the tree species of New England. Using both remote sensing and direct observations, we will monitor leaf out times across the region, and whether trees leaf out earlier now than they did in the past due to warming temperatures.
We hope you will help us gather observations of leaf out times this spring to add to the available database of current and historical observations.

If you live in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island or Connecticut, all you need to do is:
• Find one or more trees from our list of common tree species in a place that you visit regularly
• This spring, starting in mid April in Connecticut and late April, May, and early June elsewhere, check your tree every couple of days, and look for the first signs of leaf out
• Submit your observations by clicking: (http://leaf-out.fieldstation.net)

In this study, we count a new leaf when it has emerged from the bud and its final shape is mostly visible. These young leaves often have a soft or translucent quality to them, and may not yet be green. Please do not report observations of leaves that have reached their full size. Our website has pictures of young leaves and aids to identification.

That's it! Feel free to contact us if you have questions. If you are interested in expanding your observations, please read below. We look forward to seeing your observations streaming in in the coming weeks. Thanks!

Please send this request on to other people might be interested.

Sincerely,

Richard Primack and Libby Ellwood (Boston University)
