There are two trailheads at the end of that road. Unknown Pond turns uphill to the right before the final fish pen, and York Pond is just past it on the left. You can park at either one for the...
Starting to plan my NEHH finish - I need the 6 peaks in Baxter. Let me know if you are interested. Somewhere between Labor Day and 9/15 (I would like to be in NH for Flags on the 48, however.)
...
That is certainly my hope... :)

I plan to do this in September...

Really, Tom? I can use Chrome with new window (control-N) on Windows 7 without any problems. I can also drag a tab off the browser and it appears in its own window.

Tomorrow, May 3, 2013, is the tenth anniversary of the demise of the Old Man Of The Mountain. I still miss "him" every time I drive through the notch.

Many of you know that getting a dog has been a work-in-progress for me for 18 months or so. Three weeks ago, we lucked into a litter with a cancellation and now I have a new hiking companion-to-be. ...

I agree the regulations are all prohibitive (and that might be part of the problem). I know of un/under employed loggers through family up north who would love to be paid to do some of the heavy...
Or you could call in the professional crews with chainsaws... wait... they can't use them either. Most people don't have weeks of time to volunteer - more like days - and if the pros with the...
I am planning to go after Labor Day - to finish my NEHH. Will post in T & E when the time gets closer...

I don't see it as "enthusiasm for chainsaws" per se, rather enthusiasm for practical trail maintenance measures when it makes sense. We aren't Stihl or Husqvarna salespeople. In other words, if you...
I remember hiking with Jeb Bradley once and he made a comment to the effect that Wilderness (the legislation) was not created to keep people out - but to keep out logging and development. The crux...
Maybe it's because the grid IS, in its simplest form, finishing the NH48 12 times - they don't recognized the 2nd or 3rd round, so by extension, not the 12th - All other lists they recognize or...
There is a fairly extensive discussion of the bushwhack routes in this thread.

This falls into the "teaching you to fish" bucket. That's why I suggest you look at this site and the weather every 24 hours until your trip and see what affect the sun, temps, rain, etc., has on...
Watch that daily gauge (shows last 7 days) and the weather each day to see what affect the latter has on the former...

The rule of thumb is above 700 cfps on the Pemi, East Branch gauge becomes a "wet" crossing via Black Pond and the final crossing of Liberty/Lincoln Brooks. It's at 179 cfps right now and is in the...
The AMC doesn't have any recognition of The Grid at all, do they? I thought that was entirely Hiker Ed's doing.

As winter hiking increases in popularity, there are people who aren't going to do all 48 (67 (100)) but will do Washington because it is the biggest. Same as in the other three seasons... I would...
What does this translate to in practice? The trails and immediate areas are destroyed, right? How close can you bushwhack without being on the closed trails?

Vose Spur is pretty straightforward, complete with good terrain features and a some herd paths to follow. It was one of my first BWs and I did not find it difficult at all.
