Here is a video explanation. IANAL. YMMV :)
Very slick! ;) :D
I'd go the other way myself - especially if Lafayette is in the clouds in the AM as it often is and will often burn off by the PM.
The topic comes up from time-to-time, but nobody has made a case that they would keep it relevant, updated, and correct (in a generally agreed-to-by-everybody way).
A traverse is .3 miles shorter than out-and-back (from Zealand) and 3.5 miles shorter than out-and-back from Lincoln Woods. Zealand adds .2 miles round trip to any route.
Awesome photos, Jonathan, as usual! Have to get back there sometime but difficult with the dog...

On Z's point, it is a good idea to plan the end game to include a few nice weather peaks along with a few not-as-nice weather peaks. More important in winter, and more so if you are doing a single...
Sounds consistent with other experiences. (Sooner or later they are going to ask you, me, Joe / Jane Hiker some question that you'd only get right if you actually hiked Mt. Gosford :p)
Did they ask where you were going (Canada) or where you'd been (USA)? And what did you tell them?
And just like that, we're back to "whatever the ranger wants", I think.
I will paraphrase, as I have before, (then congressman) Jeb Bradley who once told me (while we were hiking) that they...
If you measured the center of the trail with a 12" ruler, you'd get one distance. If you walked behind yourself measuring with a yardstick, you'd get a different number. Same with the time samples...
The Thoreau Falls Trail bridge is an essential trail feature required in order to continue to afford reasonable and safe access to or through the wilderness.
Maybe I don't...
Well, if it was built in 1966 as John suggested above, then it is rapidly approaching the 50 year mark after which it becomes a historical landmark. And we know what happened the last time a bridge...
Developing Proposal - Est. Scoping Start 06/2015 - Decision Expected: 08/2015 - Expected Implementation 09/2015
It would seem so, given the wording "Expected Implementation..."
Congratulations, my friend!
Yeah, or one of them is the only (other) one to do it ;)
Yeah, well here's a related anecdote on that subject.
I wanted to finish both the NE67 and NE100 on the same peak at the same time. I went to Baxter with 6 peaks to go. Due to weather...
I agree that it is difficult to have South Kinsman without having North Kinsman. I would assume, perhaps incorrectly, that more people leave the Bonds for the end than the Kinsmans, so if you get...
My Golden shreds Pawz. They are "OK" in deep powder if there is no contact with rock or ice, but once the claws go to work, they are history. I want to like them. I really do, but in reality, they...
Sunday, we did Owl's Head, then continued to 13 Falls, up Franconia Brook, out-and-back to Garfield, on to Galehead, and out Gale River to a spotted car . . . I know you like Owl's Head, so maybe...
On August 9, 2013 the summit steward counted 769 people hiking to/from Lafayette. Gryffin and I were 1 of them :) Keep in mind the point of the list was to spread people out away from Franconia...
For the record, I am exceptionally cautious with Gryffin. I made the mistake (once, and only once) of not checking pads every mile or so, and learned that the ledges on a well-publicized "easy...
So... on this very subject...
What trails, in the experience of dog owners (specifically), are you unwilling to take your dog up? Huntington? Great Gulf? Tripyramid Slides?
Gryffin has done...
