Tried to do this 2 weeks ago after big dump of snow and warm conditions. Not only could I not find the trail/route off of Cabot after floundering around for 30 minutes, I realized there was no way I had the strength to break it out over to the Horn if I could find the way. Started up Bunnell Notch trail this morning at 6:45am in 0 degrees. Ideal conditions and there is still a super highway to Cabot. At summit, I realized my error from two weeks ago when I saw Sue J's tracks did not follow the arrow on the sign but almost behind it- she had the correct route. The sign could use a perpendicular attachment to correctly point the way. Even with the amazing break out job that Stinkyfeet did, it was exhausting work for me as second tracker. I've always known Stinkyfeet to be superwoman but I was still awed by the job she did last Wednesday. Tracks were entirely visible the entire way, though there were some serious areas of moose activity which made it tricky to distinguish at times. Hardest stretch for me was from the Horn to Unknown Pond. It's been years since I've hiked this route and never in winter other than up UPT. One curious note- never saw a single blaze on Unknown Pond Trail. Gorgeous day, and cool temperatures were an advantage to avoid deeper sinking. Kudos to Wonder woman for the job last Wednesday plowing it out.
