Just used one of these to solve a problem with an older Magellen unit:

If you need to hook up your older GPS with a serial port to a newer computer without a serial port, I can recommend a really good solution:

Tripplite USA-19HS USB to Serial Port adapter (about 22.50 on Amazon, prime eligible)

-Works on everything since Windows 98 to Windows 8.1 32 or 64 bit--it doesn't matter (The Amazon description is off a little for compatibility-- See http://www.tripplite.com/high-speed-usb-to-serial-adapter-keyspan~USA19HS) for updated compatibility and Mac compatibility

-Simple Installation on Vista and Up---drivers are downloaded automatically

-We use these at work at high and low baud rates and never have any issues. (Because of USB delays in transmitting whether or not the receiver can take any more data, lots of GPS software or firmware in GPS units can malfunction. This adapter circumvents this problem and there is nice writeup in the manual about how it works if you have technical interests.)
