trails: weeks brook trail, bushwhack, province pond trail

conditions: weeks brook trail was wet and slightly vague in spots. we followed it to around 2200 at a little swamp and left the trail towards rickers knoll. woods were sprucey and scrappy, but never bad. they opened up some near the summit with some nice ledge and views back towards kearsarge north. from the summit we started down on what we thought might be the route of the old trail on these peaks, but soon lost it and continued down the ridgeline in mixed bag woods. never bad, but slow with ample young spruce and rough footing. once on the ascent of the south peak of the twins we got out onto nice ledges were were able to follow up to the summit. it was a short walk between the peaks to the north summit with interspersed ledges and a small tarn in between. nice ledgy top on that one with a good view to nearby shaw as well as into the wild river area. more of the same mixed woods up to the wooded highpoint on shaw. on the descent we visited the burnt over knoll perched high above province pond then dropped down in steep, but open hardwoods that continued all the way to the shelter. the trail around the pond from the shelter was much like a herd path, but then it was pretty much a road walk the rest of the way down to the parking lot.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: very fun hike/bushwhack. much slower and tougher going overall than i think i was expecting and it ended up being a solid day. each summit had its rewards, but the twins in particular provided nice views from various points. we had hoped to find more evidence of the old trails in this area, but they appear to have mostly faded away. thanks to jeremy for a great hike.
