Trails: Firewarden's Trail, AT

Trail Conditions: Muddy sections on the lower FWT. Not steep until the final mile to the col - where it is a long, strenuous staircase, which had great footing all the way. There is one section once you hit height-of-land where you hit a fork and if you look left you see a blue blaze, but it's not the trail - just go right. Not sure what the deal is there.

Equipment: None.

Comments: One last hike for the weekend before a long drive home. We got a late start because we decided to sleep in. The first miles up to the Moose Falls campsite are super gradual. Once you hit the campsite it is straight up to the ridgeline. It eventually ended where we made it to the AT junction. Lots of beautiful tent platforms up there - maybe for a next trip. The summit of Avery Peak was beautiful with especially nice views over Flagstaff Lake. This is where we noticed a couple of dark clouds in the vicinity - although everything else was blue as could be. We didn't stay too long unfortunately and moved over to West Peak. Not as nice, but still great views, and nice to see the Horns. The dark cloud we had seen had moved at this point, but another one was right behind with obvious rain and then a couple of rolls of thunder happened. We both were slightly spooked, so we decided to hightail it out of there. Unfortunatley, the thunder would soon subside and it remained mainly blue skies - would have been nice to enjoy the views longer. Only one small rainshower on the walk out, but at that point, it felt great. A great weekend in Maine!
