Another vacation means another backlog of TR's. :) On Monday we hiked Mount Dustin in Wentworth Location. It was #77 for us on the New Hampshire Fire Tower List of the 93 tower that are standing, once stood or were proposed. We followed a logging road in off of RT 16 to the end and started from there. We were able to follow some of the old timber covered roads to the base of the mountain. They made the path clear that we needed, but also required much more caution to walk on. We do not have Ms. Brandi with us this week, which we were happy for because the hike may not have happened. The thought of her paws falling through one of the many holes through the timber would probably cause her to break a paw. At some points we joked that we wished we had snowshoes on. We could see some areas we were walking on were 3-4 feet of piled timbers.
We reached the end of the timber beds at 0.8miles from the summit and started our bushwhack from there. We were lucky enough to find a lot of herd paths that we were able to use on our way up to the summit. We got a small view as we came into a small col. We turned right there and headed back into the forest. That was when we hit the dense part of the woods. It had rained for a couple of day before we attempted this, so this is where we got soaked! After the dense area we were in ferns at 0.17 from the summit. It was a nice change and gave our pants a chance to start drying some.
We arrived at the summit and it was viewless, but it was the high point for Wentworth Location. In 1959 a tower was proposed and was only going to be a secondary fire tower, but it was never built. The hike back down was uneventful, we got wet again and used caution on the timber covered roads.

We did post a video for anyone interested in seeing the hike...Just follow the link.
