Steve (Little Brown Mushroom) and I left the LOJ at 4:20 after spotting a car at Rooster Comb. Things went smoothly til we broke treeline on Wright. There was hoar frost on the trees and a glaze of ice on all the rock. Neither of us had spikes with us so we skated slowly along as best we could trying to avoid serious falls. These conditions continued over Algonquin and Iroquois. It was a lot like Winter up there! Steve led us down over Shepherds Tooth (my first visit) down to the pass. We regrouped a bit and headed up the herd path to Marshall. We headed down to Colden Dam and up to Four Corners. The legs were beginning to feel it as we did Gray and Skylight. After a quick lunch break we climbed the backside of Marcy. Luckily temps were low with intermittent sun and good views most of the day. We chatted with the summit Steward and began the death march out to Haystack and down the Great Range. Steve maintained a great pace and we made it out to Rooster Comb TH eighteen hours after our start. We were both a bit beat up from falls on the ice and miles of mud. We celebrated briefly before heading back to the LOJ to retrieve Steves car. A great day out with lots of above treeline views of the amazing Adirondacks.
