On Sunday, march 1, 10 of us skied through the Pemi Wilderness via the Thoreau Falls Trail. Route followed was #23 in David Goodwin's book. (Zealand hut to Lincoln Woods). There was a hard track left by skiers probably the previous weekend. Only one small stream crossing on the Cedar Brook Trail section that required skis off to cross. Other than that, plenty of snow cover and no sign of any melting yet.

The track was from the day before. 13 skiers traversed but the section on Thoreau Trail was unbroken and unconsolidated and the snow was so dry it was hard to consolidate. Therefore it might have still been soft for you and feel like it was from last week.
