to get to trailhead from northwood nh, fill up with gas, get a xtra xtra large coffee, and drive 248 miles to start of trail. 5 hour drive.
more specific, from rt 27 in Stratton, going north, after entering alder stream , take a left on north road. there is a Penobscot sign at road entrance. set trip meter to 0. a short ways in there will be a left. do not go left. at 2.8 bear left and .1 to .2 later, bear left again. at 3.9 bear right. road ends at 5.0
for trail. start up trail for about 200 yds and take the sharp left and over the bridge. there will be a second bridge about 20 minutes later. just keep going. follow this path/logging road for another 15 minutes and you will take a sharp left while crossing a third bridge. about 3 minutes up the path you will see a couple of large boulders on the right side along with a small carin. jump in the woods here and follow this drainage swail up hill for about 4 minutes then it jogs slightly right and follow until you come to a four way intersection.. easy to follow. you will see another bridge to your left. do not go that way, nor straight. instead, take a right. the path starts out muddy and grassy, then turns into rough gravel. follow for about 15 minutes and you will see a small carin at about 3100 ft on the right hand side. that is the herd path to the peak. at about 3700 ft, or 200 below summit, there will be on old trail going left heading west and down hill. make sure you go right here and on your return trip, make sure you do not miss your correct path.
round trip should be about 4 1/2 hours at a regular pace with a lunch break. things were fairly dry for this time of year. during heavy rain or snow melt off, that drainage swail may be wet. no bugs. beautiful day and a great stay in Stratton.
