Unfortunately, no. From the last paragraph of the article.... "The bar he carried has been installed at the top of Mount Elbrus, as a monument to his incredible feat."

I agree....unfortunately it is a monument??? Damn, that is bizarre and IMHO just doesn't belong.
I think in the sense of "In the authority invested in me by me, I hereby establish this monument to me, because I am awesome."

Thanks for sharing this story Brian. I got a kick out of it. And to think I am doing anything to keep weight off my back while hiking. I won't even bring toothbrushing stuff if its just a one night backpack.
As for the LNT outcry here--I suppose anyone is welcome to carry the barbell out. Or try your luck dealing with Putin.
