Stratton mountain. Hiked on 10 6 15. Another great weather day to take a day off from work. Morning temps of 44 and afternoon temps of mid 60’s. D&D and Laura started the trip out at 5am. Stopped in Brattleboro for breakfast. From Brattleboro, rt. 9 for 20 miles to rt 100 north. Rt. 100 for 13.5 miles, then left on Stratton/Arlington rd.. Follow for about 7 miles and just after road turns to gravel, A.T. trailhead and parking will be on right.
Took A.T./ L.T. north bound and took us right to summit. Nice easy going trail that has been well maintained. Looks like lots of hard work went into setting stepping stones and building rock water bars. Gentle slope for first mile and a half, then just a moderate climb to summit. Lower section of forest is a nice mix of beech, maple, ash, birch with hobble underbrush. No issues with water or mud. Upper part of trail has a few roots to keep an eye on. Forest species eventually turns to mostly balsam with some spruce. Met up with caretakers at summit and got some history of the trails and tower. Up the tower, we had some great 70 plus mile views. Foliage in the valley’s has some great color. We were told on a very clear day, you could see 100 plus miles to Mt. Washington, but the distant haze did not offer that today. We had a nice long lunch at the base of the tower and soaked up some sun. One more trip up the tower was needed before we departed. Total of 6.8 miles round trip. About 1700 ft gain. 2.10 up, and 2.0 coming down.
