Bare booted it from the Highlands Center up to our intended goal of Mt Jackson via Webster/Jackson trail. Had forgotten to pack micro-spikes (duh!) so it proved to be a looooong day. There were icy spots all over the place on the way up and we often had to resort to bushwhacking off trail to find a safe way past the ice. The last few hundred yards were particularly treacherous across the exposed slabs to the summit but we did make it.
The group's consensus was NOT to return the same way to minimize the potential danger but rather to head south across the saddle to Webster and descend from there. Still plenty of ice going over to Webster, and then from Webster on the descent to 302. It took a long time to descend. Once again bushwhacking and butt sliding across the icier sections. Micro-spikes would certainly have solved 99% of our problems.
We had left the AMC at 9.30 and got back by c. 2.45 by which time some of the less icy spots at the lower elevations had melted out - it turned out to be pretty warm.
A great day out when all was said and done - despite the operator error.
