Need help identifying this insect

This insect hitched a ride on my shirt Saturday at Monadnock. It was about 3/4" long. Have looked through my Audubon Insect book and at least 500 plates for insects in Mass and NH on the internet and can not find anything that even closely resembles it. Any entomologists out there that can shed some light on it for me. Thanks in advance.

Thank you. Had never run across one. From what I just read I am glad my curiosity didn't lead me to try to handle it. From all accounts they can inflict quite the painful bite/sting. I knew someone here would know what it was. Thanks again.
 
My mom got bit/stung by an Assasin bug while raking leaves. It was a bit painful and got infected. She had to go to the doctor's and take a course of antibiotics. :(
