The next day, it was still Shawn, Matt, and myself; the other three wouldn't be joining us until later in the day. So we decided to do a warm-up hike up nearby Sentinel Mountain (1842'), which you could see off to the east as you sit at the water's edge next to our cabin. The trailhead lies just a couple hundred feet from our cabin of the same name, and leads to long, broad peak with a loop trail spanning its length. Weather was real nice, if a little warm down below. The trail is well-marked and maintained, easy at first then moderate in places; it never gets really steep.

Up on the summit, several open ledges offer fine views to the east over the Penobscot River, and back down toward Kidney Pond and over to the west side of Katahdin. For a little over 5 miles and about 1100' elevation gain, it was just right.

Once back at the cabin, we were soon joined by Brett, and a bit later by Sam and Andrew. I cooked up a meal of spaghetti with meat and garlic bread, along with some great wine, then we all headed out on the pond in canoes and kayaks for a sunset/dusk exploration.

The pond really looks and feels much more like a lake, for its size and largely clear water. There's a large cove that jets out to the northwest and is known for moose sightings; none on this trip, though. We also passed cabin #12, the only one there that is accessible only by boat. Cool.

We all turned in relatively early. The cabin is divided into two rooms with three beds each (one bunk, one single), with very comfortable cabin/lodge-type mattresses. We'd need the rest, for the next day would bring the highlight for most on the trip: a summit traverse of Katahdin.
