I guess a 10 AM start is probably not regarded as a alpine start.

I'm sure there will be the inevitable enumeration of all the things they could have done better, but the footing on whatever trail they were on from that pic looks downright gnarly. I'm sure that slowed them down, especially being from where they are now. I don't remember the TRT (if that's the trail they were on, guessing from the only reference in the article) being that rough, though it's been 12-15 years since I was there. Has it degraded over the recent past?
 
Tuckerman Ravine trail is effectively paved with stone top to bottom. There has been major stone step work all along the steep sections The only current issue is that a lower section of the trail is detoured up the Sherburne Trail.
