Start planning - 2024 Eclipse path runs over Katahdin

My guess is the Baxter park rules will not vary much from what they are today. Park loop and trails are sometimes open after March 30 if snow conditions allow. April the Alpine is always closed I believe.

Chic Choc tent camping in Winter

Appreciate the responses, but still not much information. I have looked at Sepaq on the web and I have tried to talk with them on the phone. I have been to the chic chocs 3x's in winter and 1x in summer so pretty familiar with area, language issues there. Specific question: The mines hut is...

Chic Choc tent camping in Winter

So I have looked around the web with little luck. A phone call to Sepaq and a return one yielded little information as their English was as poor as my French. I know there is a year round open campground near the Gite. long time ago I just freelance camped in winter. Stayed at the Mines a...

Man falls 1000 feet to his death on Katahdin's Abol Slide.

None of the public accounts has any information on equipment or the exact nature of how he lost his footing. Possible he had an axe and/or crampons. A month of so ago I heard there was a thick icing event and seems it has stuck around. Bed surface like that bears watching for future snows...

    Nansen Ski Jump video

I think there is still a club jump in Brattleboro, VT. Jumped there and some other places. Would be great to see it come back. Best toboggan run ever is when you feel the Bernoulli effect under your skis. Same as sledding, hike up to go down. Thanks for the thread. Ski jumping used to be a...

    Three things about Baxter Park

In terms of regulations Baxter State Park has undergone a reformation. Trails are closed if there is a threat to the environment (melt out/mud season) or people (Abol slide with the loose giant rocks-I certainly would not want one kicked down on me). In the past trails would be closed due to...

Baxter opens Abol Slide Trail for winter use.

Thanks for posting that as I was wondering about it. I think the slide will remain a common route up. With the improvement of the Park Rules it has seen much more use.

New Deer Tick Virus Emerges in New York

Remember when I read this last year and freaked a bit especially given the reported mortality rate. I have not noticed any further research since the initial review.
