Weird Tragedy Bash Bish Falls, MA/NY

I am reminded of the tragic death of Vermont State Police diver Sergeant Gary A. Gaboury, who drowned in Huntington Gorge in Richmond Vermont while attempting the recovery of the body of another drowning victim on May 12, 1992. These similar backcountry gorges offer unique and challenging...

    Missing person

My sister, Helen Holmes is missing, and hasn't been seen since Friday, Sept. 6, 2013. While Helen isn't a hiker, she is a lover of nature, and spends a lot of time outdoors. She lives in Townshend, VT, and frequents natural areas in southeast Vermont. Helen also has taken trips to the White...

You know you are NOT a peakbagger when...

You've hiked most of "The List," but you never bother to record the date. (Hmm...it must have been the early '90's...maybe '93?)

    Wilderness and invasives?

There's a section of the WMNF website dealing with invasives (NNIS.) There are pages showing invasive plants known in the forest, near the forest, and insects of special concern. There are maps showing treatment locations, and a list of locations with species present and treatment method to be...

That's NOT how you say it !!!

My New Hampshire native parents pronounce it "COE-OSS" County. When they lived in Oregon, however they learned to pronounce Coos Bay as "Coose Bay." (rhymes with "loose")

    Found: SD card in case

Today I found an SD memory card in a case at the Marlborough Trail trailhead at the base of Mt. Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH. It has some pictures on it. PM me if you lost one.

    Nor'easter of No'easter?

I know I'm bucking the media here, but I object to the term "Nor'easter." Any student of New England accents will realize that no New Englander would pronounce that "R" in the middle of "Northeaster." It should properly be pronounced "Nawth-easter."

FYI: Northern Pass High Voltage Transmission Project

It's interesting to me that much of the "Central Section First Alternative," and the "Preferred Route" parallels an existing high-voltage right of way from near Bath as far south as Salisbury, crossing it in Bath, and again in Groton. I seem to remember that that existing line comes from Quebec...

Herd Path from top of Rattlesnake

I vaguely remember a description of a trip that went through to Mt. Carr along this ridge. I don't remember where I heard the story. From Mt. Carr, I once followed a herd path south in this direction, but it petered out after a half-mile or so. That's a few miles away. I also remember...

    Moat traverse

Red Ridge Trail I came down the Red Ridge Trail a few years ago in very good conditions. The trail travels over open sloped ledges and was a little difficult to follow because there weren't many cairns or blazes to follow. I don't remember it being rough at all.

can this area in NH be reached without trespassing?

My mother grew up within a mile of this bridge and told me stories of walking across it and swimming there. That was in the 1940's, so it's not even a little bit relevant to the original question, though.

    disorientation at Pawtuckaway SP

I've enjoyed hiking a nice loop from the campground up the Fundy trail to the Shaw trail and over South Mountain, returning by way of the Mountain trail without much trouble. Once I went over to Round Pond and got mixed up finding the Boulder trail, but I walked up the road to the next trail...
