    Escarpment trail water sources flowing?

The spring on Tremper Mt was flowing last weekend. We’ve had some rain of late so springs are likely flowing.

    Cougar passed through ADKs

Three years ago my husband saw a mt. lion while hunting from his tree stand in the central Catskills. I draw no conclusions from this except that there was a mt. lion in the central Catskills three years ago.:)

    Catskill Loon-acy

I once saw one on the Ashokan Reservoir in Late April. I have heard them from time to time from my backyard as well (I live less than a mile from the Reservoir), mostly in he spring. I consider them rare in the Catskills. ecc

    Catskill Record

Previous unsupported 3500 marathon Hi, My husband went to school with Jim Senecal and he tells me Jim climbed the peaks with Joe Hevesi in one shot in 78 or 79. They walked from trail head to trail head. When they did it, the Freeman wrote a full page article about it. You may be able to dig...

Does a Poke in the Eye...

When skiing, I wear a helmet, knee pads and goggles. That way, I'm protected from the lack of grooming. Somewhat. ecc

    Baselayer suggestions

If you are a profuse sweater, you may need to dress more lightly. Carry a thick top layer for when you stop, but wear something really thin when moving, making sure whatever you wear will still block the wind enough to keep frost bite away. This works for ski touring. It may not work if you're...

Baldwin leanto on Mt Tremper (Catskills)

I'm thinking it doesn't get as much use as other lean-tos in the Catskills. You might check out the lean-to journal to get a better idea. I think most people record their stay in these notebooks. I frequently hike this mountain and frequently see the lean-to empty. ecc

    Rattlesnakes on Lake George NY

I saw a rattler on 5th Mt. in the Lake George region three or so years ago. The only time I've ever hiked in the area. Luckily I heard him before I saw him (her?). Schenemunck Mt. in Orange County New York is a hot place for rattle snakes. I used to hike there quite often when I lived in...

    huntersfield mt. -catskills

We checked it out. I posted it on trail conditions. A very beautiful area which I'd never been to before. Thanks for the directions. Are there any maps of the roads and logging trails on the mountain, other than the USGS? ecc

    Calling all Gypsy Moth Experts!!!

Pesky flies I've twice heard the same rumor and in two different locales, Saugerties and Wells, NY. The rumor is that the DEC has released those large, ankle-biting flies to control the caterpillar population. I pooh-poohed it, but thought I'd post it to see if anyone else has heard it or has...

Good reference I've saved the entire thread as a pdf in my "hiking etc" folder on my computer. I know I'll be referring back to it again and again. Thanks, ecc
