I find that for light touring equipment it's best to keep your eye out on trash day or yard sales. It is absolutely amazing how many perfectly usable cross-country skis end up in the trash. So for the kick and glide into Zealand, by 75 mm lightweight boots and watch the trash for free skis...
I saw what looked like fat bike ( fat tire mountain bike) tracks on the Summit Ridge yesterday. The tracks were not recent they were in the old frozen crusty layer. So it appears somebody may have given it a go.
Thanks, your friend's description makes me think it's doable. I've taken a road bike over Jefferson Notch before, so if it's the usual fall conditions, it's no problem for this group. I'm a bit concerned that the repair work may have started, making the road un- rideable.
We will be on lightweight road bikes. We've done the same route before, Jefferson Notch is challenging on a road bike but doable. That is, without the irene factor.

Does anyone have an update on either Long Pond and Bear Notch? Planning a bike ride this weekend and would like to include both.
