There are 2 backpacking trails; the Higland Trail and the Western Highland Trail. Both accessable off hiway 60. You can do 2, 3 or 4 day trips.

I purchased the stud replacement and put in the sole of my sorels. They work great and they don't interfer when I werar crampons

I have not had problems with bears on the islands, but I still hang my food as there are many other animals that are on the islands that can be a problem. You can also check with the loacl ranger, they are in the NY phone book, about bear sighting in the area you are heading for.

A friend used to work search and rescure for the DEC and they don't start a search until someone is reported missing. They don't go by the logs to start the search. They do use the logs to try and trace the route to help with the search.

I am planning on hiking the Rangeley range this coming weekend going from west to east. Is there anyone in the area that operates a shuttle service so I can get a ride over to the trail head at ME 4?
