I understand, what I'm getting at is that this guy already had planned poorly to the point where he had to go significantly out of his way to grab water (instead of filling up at Galehead or managing his supply more efficiently) and ended up in an area that required cash to camp as night was...
It's mind boggling that people go out of their way to tick Carter Dome off the list and won't go 10 easy minutes out of the way to hit Height. I remember camping at Guyot a few years ago and another camper there paid for a thru hiker to stay overnight as a courtesy. Apparently the thru hiker ran...
Oh no! Very sad to read this, I'd always swing by for a few Allagash Blacks and a Greek pizza after doing any hike in the Pinkham/Northern Presi area. Anyone I took there always joked about how they put the wood fire oven front and center, but dang if it didn't make some of the best pizza I've...
The spring at Speckled is listed on the AMC map but I was looking for directions to it in the Bickford Brook description - whoops! We ended up doing Stairs anyway and there were a couple of running streams on Davis between the ledgy section and Stairs Col. This is the wettest summer since I...
Planning on taking a friend on his first backpacking trip sometime within the next few days (if we can get a good weather window). One trip we were considering was camping out on Stairs. After doing some research it looks like the decommissioned Resolution Shelter used to have a water source. Is...
Can't speak for the other questions, but if you wouldn't have an issue descending King Ravine then Chemin is totally fine. I remember there was one little scramble under a boulder on the way up, but other than that it's just steep with some minor loose footing.
What I find confusing is how someone can go out of their way to plan a hiking trip in NH, i.e. devote time and money to physically travel up here, purchase plane tickets, rent a hotel room/secure a campsite and all the other logistics, without having an inkling of what the general trail...
Yeah the lower slabs in the wooded section have some moss on them, imagine it'd be very slippery in the rain. I read somewhere that three days to dry out is safe for the north slide, can't remember where and it may be a completely arbitrary number.
Glad you had a good hike, Grey J. Figured I'd piggyback on this thread since I can't find a lot of info on the South Baldface shelter. Are there any legal spots to tent in the area or is it 1/4 mile restricted? People mention the BCT is very dry higher up, but is there any water source at or...
Was just up there this past weekend and wasn't aware of the spring until checking the summit in on Peakbagger and seeing it on the USFS map. I can say that the Bickford Brook trail was extremely dry, totally at odds with the trail description (multiple stream crossings, swimming holes etc)...
This is how I feel about it too. After making it over a few of the "tricky" scrambles, my foot slipped substantially when I shifted weight onto it at a section where you essentially have to hug an outcropping and drag yourself on top of it. Ended up bailing after that part and taking the woods...
You could always do an out-and-back from Carter Dome, it's a pretty mellow ridge walk over to Hight without any substantial elevation gain/loss.
I'll throw in a vote for Whiteface/Passaconnaway, the Blueberry Ledge trail is really fun and there's some great camping either right at the top of...
Zealand Notch/Thoreau Falls. Mostly flat the whole way, no official campsites but there are spots to set up. Can also extend further into the Pemi if you wanted (Ethan Pond, Shoal Pond etc).
