Grand Canyon area from Las Vegas

This is a good day trip, have done it a few times. You do drop off the western arm, right at the point where it narrows and goes out to the tip. The trail switchbacks down from there to the junction of the Tonto. There is a steel rod stuck in the ground in the middle of a cairn at that point...

Grand Canyon area from Las Vegas

You'll surely be doing a couple of day hikes at the south rim area I imagine. Here are a few links that might help: 1. Grand Canyon National Park The official web site for the GC NPS 2. Bird & Hike For someone who's never visited, I'd suggest these from his list, in the order that I think...

    Grand Canyon in July

Glad you had a fun hike! Sounds like you managed the distance and the heat very admirably. During your canyon hike, I was back east visiting the kids and grandkids and spent a day hiking on Mt Monadnock. The humidity during my hike was nearly unbearable, so count yourself lucky that you had...

Not All Successful Search and Rescues end well

"Their vehicle was found under water Tuesday night, about 175 feet off the Pond Cove boat ramp. Rescuers located it when they saw bubbles rising to the surface of the water." Sounds like they probably stayed inside the vehicle (for whatever reason) while it floated out before sinking. Tragic...

    Upper Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Nice shots! The place is 3 hours up the road but sadly I have not made a visit since we moved here 3 years ago. Actually, Page was on my short list of towns to move to when we relocated, but Prescott has better facilities and had more options for housing at the time.

    Grand Canyon in July

I'd venture a guess that maybe Phantom Ranch does post a daily weather forecast, but in all honesty, I'm thinking that in July it probably won't be necessary unless you happen to hit a freakish rainy day. Monsoon storms usually don't happen before 2 PM as a general rule. Otherwise you can...

    Grand Canyon in July

I live out here and hike the canyon on a regular basis. Over the past 3 years and hundreds of canyon miles, I have seen exactly 1 rattlesnake and that was crossing the trail at Indian Garden in front of about 25 spectators who spent the next 5 minutes photographing it. I've never had any...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

LOL...I'll be there in July for a hike but at the moment it seems like it'll be Webster Cliff and Mt Jackson. I'll try to leave the matches in the car!

Mtn Monadnock and a little place called Pumpelly Cave!!!!!

Back in the 70's and 80's I used to do a lot of volunteer work at Monadnock which included search and rescue as well as extensive trail maintenance and cairn construction. Over the years I've lost track of the number of times I've been to the summit, but a conservative estimate would be well in...

Huge group hike planned Franconia Ridge.

Still can't compare to Columbus Day on Mt Monadnock. Many years you can't even get into the state park to start up the White Dot / White Cross, but have to chose alternative trail heads to park at. Of course you could always move out here and put up with the endless turnstile action heading...

    Old Man - 10 years ago - May 3, 2013

That was the same with me. I had stayed overnight in the North Conway area, and was driving through the notch in the fog the following morning when I spotted the TV vans. For the life of me, I didn't know what that was all about, and didn't hear the news until I had arrived at home. Darn fog...

Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites

That was my favorite as well, but it burned down because of my "aura." Well maybe I should explain. I have this eerie situation which causes restaurants to go up in flames shortly after I visit them. And no, it has nothing to do with arson. To wit: 1. A diner in Hubbardston MA burned down...
