    North Brother Winter Access

We stayed at Slide Dam 2 nights this past December and did the 4 peaks there. From Telos Road to Slide Dam is roughly 9 miles, and from there to N. Brother is 3.7 miles. That is a 25.4 mile round-trip, so I wouldn't recommend it as a day hike. A couple of nights at Nesowadnehunk or Slide Dam...

old cabin location on Hunt Spur?

After posting, I just found a 1930 map on the web that shows two old cabins on Abol Trail - the Sewell Camp and Garland Camp. It also shows a St. Johns Trail which goes up the mountain on the southeast side, which must be completely obsolete. Does anybody know anything about that trail?

old cabin location on Hunt Spur?

I'm hoping someone can refresh my memory or direct me to the post that had this - was there not, long ago, a cabin somewhere high up on either the Hunt Spur or in the vicinity of the Abol Trail on Katahdin? I remember at one point seeing an old map that had the location marked, but I also...

East Sleeper via Downs Brook, Kate Sleeper Trails, 2-7-15

Downs Brook Trail was unbroken after the ski trail turned off about a half mile in. Snow depths were around 10 inches at lower elevation, increasing to 18 inches to 2 feet higher up. The deepest snow was on the steep side slopes in the valley. There were quite a number of blowdowns on the...

    East Kennebago, 1-2-15

East Kennebago, 1-2-15. Logging road up from Route 16, town line to height of land, then bushwhack northwest to peak. Logging roads were all snowmobiled, with about an inch of powder on top of packed snow and ice. Skiing up was fine. Skiing down was a little treacherous, with the wind...

    Stratton Mountain via LT, 12-29-14

12-29-14, Stratton Mt. via Long Trail. The road to the trailhead (West Wardsboro side), beyond where the pavement ends, had some ice along it but because there was so much dirt showing there were no traction problems. The entire trail was hard-packed snow, and most of the snow off the trail in...

Found - phone on Wild River Trail

I found a phone a little ways west of the former Perkins Notch shelter site on the Wild River Trail. It turns on so it hasn't been damaged (I didn't investigate it any more than turning it on). Found on July 25. If it is yours, PM me here or email at [email protected]

    Downs Brook, partway, 3/15/14

Downs Brook Trail now broken to the 7th brook crossing (a little over 3 miles). It was just way too sticky and heavy to continue. It took me almost 4 hours to go that far, and as the day warmed up I found I had to bang my snowshoes off every 10 steps, so I turned around at that point (mainly...

    Snowshoes for bigger kids

I've done some searching online and I'm not finding quite what I want - my oldest daughter, age 7, will be outgrowing her boots next year and as a result, outgrowing her snowshoe bindings on her kid's LLBean Winter Walker snowshoes. I'm looking for a good snowshoe but not too expensive for her...

CAUTION for people who hike with dogs

If you have to administer hydrogen peroxide, it is easiest to do with a plastic syringe - you can pick one up from the vet and they are small and light so if you have H2O2 with you, you might as well carry the syringe as well. I believe 1-2 teaspoons is what was recommended for our beagle mix...

    Boundary, 2-1-14

Boundary Peak from Canada. Skied in from the gate at ZEC Louise-Gosford. Ski route: Chemin Gosford, left on Chemin Clearwater, left again at the next junction with a gated road, and finally right on Chemin de la Grive (all junctions have signs). From gravel pit at the end of Chemin de la...

Slip-sliding on the swath from Coburn Gore, 1-20-14

I made a ridiculous attempt at Boundary Peak from Coburn Gore today. I thought the boundary swath would perhaps be skiable since it was frequently snowmobiled, only to discover it is not, really. Not really at all. There are little cliffs and lots of big rocks and steep stretches which make...

    Angle of declination

This Christmas I got a new AMC White Mountain Guide, and I was comparing the maps with my very much older guide, as well as an even older (20-years old) guide. I was surprised to see that, in the two older guides, the angle of declination listed on the maps was 16.5 to 17 degrees. However, on...

    Cupsuptic Snow, 1-5-14

Route: Cupsuptic Snow from Wiggle Brook Road. Tim Pond Road, Kennebago River Road, and across the bridge to Wiggle Brook Road was plowed, and the plowing continued beyond Snow Mountain, I'm not sure how far. (Burnt Mountain Road was NOT plowed; it had been plowed in the past two years when Tim...

    Holyoke hike help?

Thank you very much! That gives me a couple of options, and we can check the weather closer to the hike to see if one is better than another. Thanks for the copperhead warning, too. I hadn't considered that, being up north where we have no poisonous snakes. It would be fun to see a...

    Holyoke hike help?

I'm looking for some info on a hike in Massachusetts. I've spent all my time in the northern mountains and never hiked in MA, but in a few weeks I'm meeting up with a college friend to do something somewhere nice down there. I'm thinking of doing about a 10-mile section of the...

    Blueberry Mountain 5-4-13

We took the Blueberry Mountain Trail from Glencliff, parking at the gate. Everything was dry as a bone, and the ticks were out. A few blowdowns on the lower section of trail, easy to get around. A really hot day, but it was beautiful. We took our daughters, ages 6 and nearly 4, and a dog...

    Elephant 3-5-13

Route: I skied up Elephant Mountain Road, then bushwhacked to the summit. My ascent route was definitely not the best - I went up too far to the west, and encountered a lot of thick stuff loaded with piles of snow. On reaching the summit ridge, I tried several times to force my way up through...

Supposed to be Cupsuptic Snow, but I think it was Twin Mountain

Today I tried to drive up the East Branch Road to climb Cupsuptic Snow, but looking back over maps and satellite images, I think the East Branch Road wasn't plowed all the way, while a right fork about a half mile from the beginning was plowed, and I went on up that about two miles, parked, and...

    Winter Boot Recommendation

Three cheers for duct tape and plastic shoping bags! The bags were held in place by my gaiters and snowshoe bindings, all of which held the duct tape in place. My feet were the driest part of me all day. Still hoping the new boots come soon, though.
