    Thoughts on Energy Gel's

Try some of the baby food pouches...lots of fruit and/or veggies with oatmeal, quinoa or some other grain, so you get the fruit sugar plus the carbs of the grain...much better, IMO, than the gels.

Trap Dike - Best Hike in ADKs - hike or climb?

Umm - I'm guessing not. Thank god I was with good company, or that hike would've been miserable.

    Pokomoonshine - northern Adirondacks gem

This must be the place for the wordy trip reports. OK, I'll bite. Was there, too. Nice. Very nice. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151888751848453.1073741835.502903452&type=1&l=fffe45dd31

Exercise helps increase flu vaccine effectiveness

I didn't mean to imply that the flu shot gave me the flu....I know there are various strains each year, and each years vaccine is a guessas to which one will be the problem that year. If you're exposed to a variety not covered by them vaccine, you get no protection. Supposedly that's why this...

Exercise helps increase flu vaccine effectiveness

I've had the flu one in the last twenty years, and it was the one year I got the vaccine. Never again for me.

Exercise helps increase flu vaccine effectiveness

Perhaps it's the exercise that promotes increased immune response anyway...no?

What quotations or phrases keep you going in difficult outdoor situations?

Jens Voigt - pro cyclist - was asked something like this concerning why he is such a good climber on the long bike tours like the Tour de France. His answer propels me, whether it be while hiking or cycling. Jens "I just say - Shut Up Legs!"

    Thermos

Ellen - I use a HydroFlask, too, except for the wide mouth version, and carry a small Innate cup with me.

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

Just returned from a trip to Wegmans, and can't believe I forgot to mention a winter favorite....fruitcake! Just make sure to slice it beforehand, and put a few slices in a baggie. Lots of carbs...and wicked good, especially if you have that Thermos of hot tea!

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

Ugh - that gives me the chills. The thought of entering a diabetic coma while winter hiking precludes those foods from my diet! But hey, YMMV!!

Hiking Food Suggestions for Winter, Above Treeline

There ya go! And a little nip of something to wash it down? For me, cheeses are great, along with jerky. Ramen noodles in a small food flask can be good. Depends on the hike and the conditions, sometimes it's good to set a spell and heat up some water and make some bouillon or something...the...

Let's bee honest and tell the truth.

Personally I'd pick C or D, but unfortunately my knee has objected and insists I select 'less than A'. Since that isn't a choice, I had to pick something else.

    Thermos

HydroFlask Bar none. I have the 40 oz and a few smaller ones. Took it up Algonquin last winter...-10F in the parking lot, hot tea in the flask. Still hot when I returned to the car later in the day...and it never warmed up above that, but kept getting colder out. Similarly, I used the 21oz one...

Anyone have a dog that doesn't like to hike?

I've seen a few kits online for that...and our vet offered it to us (Suburban Animal in Henrietta)...so it exists. We just didn't think it was worth the money, since all it would have told us is her breed.

Anyone have a dog that doesn't like to hike?

Our dog is definitely NOT a hiker...for one, she really doesn't stay with us, so we need to keep her leashed at all times. While I know that is the law anyway, we all know it isn't always followed, nor is it always convenient or safe. But the biggest problem with Gracie, a flat coat retriever...
