Engine Hill Bushwhack And Isolation In Winter

Thanks for the explanation, peakbagger. Sorry for getting you and Allozy mixed up; his "Hiking Mt Isolation" page linked to your bushwhack description. As a relative newcomer to the White Mountains, I really appreciate the time and effort you more experienced hikers have put in to providing...

Engine Hill Bushwhack And Isolation In Winter

First, thank-you for your excellent pages on the 4000 Footer Mountains. I referred to them frequently while doing my single season summer NH48 a couple of years ago. Now I am referring to them again as I am planning my single season winter NH48 for this winter. They are very helpful. Second, I...

    Catamount Trail End-to-End

Canoe the Connecticut seems a great way. Love to see your MTB route. I'd like to ride it too. For the road bike crossing, consider the Bayley-Hazen Military Rd for about half the state (from Montgomery Ctr to Wells River).

    Should I Hike Solo?

Is that a typo? Do you mean winter 48? If not, what is a winter 46?

    Should I Hike Solo?

I agree with much this author says about hiking alone, with a couple exceptions. I don't take the risks he does. I don't think giving my itinerary to someone diminishes my adventure at all. http://www.backpacker.com/destinations-stories/solo-hiking/ My favorite part was his comparing...

    Nanospikes

In the days before Microspikes, I bought Yak Traks for everyone in my family. I quickly learned they don't even provide enough traction for icy sidewalks, let alone hiking. I now love my Microspikes and will happily send the Yak Traks to anyone who will pay the shipping.

    TSL Symbioz Elite Snowshoes

Does anyone have experience with these snowshoes? TSL Symbioz Elite Snowshoes I wasn't able to find any useful reviews online. I want a snowshoe for hiking the NH4Ks. The ones I used for Washington and Wildcat A did not have aggressive crampons or riser bar and I had to work harder than people...

Leather mountaineering boots need good home. Mens' 9.5ish

I'm looking for SLI boots. I hiked 8 weekends in the Whites this winter in my pac boots. I won't be in VT anytime soon, though I am working on the NE 4Ks so will be up there this summer. I wear size 9.5 or 10. For trade, I have gear 10-15 years old: ski equipment, bike gear, snow shoes...

    Lions Head....

AMC group did winter route on 3/2. Used crampons and ice axe from the sled cache to the summit. Mostly had to side step on the steep section to Lion's Head. The crux, "Hilary's Step" was mostly bare rock and a bottleneck. Front pointed on rock and grabbed roots to get up and then back down...

Wild River Wilderness & Black Angel Trail, Sat 9/24/11

Well, it was an adventure... See the photos here Adventure is... high endeavor - The plan was to hike 20 miles in 1 day. 14+ hours book time with 12 hours of sunlight total commitment - When I left my house at 3:40am it was dark and pouring rain, and it continued to rain for much of my hike...

    Harvard Cabin & Tuckerman Ravine

Six of us stayed at the Harvard Cabin on Rte 16 in Pinkham Notch, April 18 to April 20. We spent the days hiking, biking, and skiing, and the evenings singing, eating, and playing Bananagrams. See the photos and trip report here...

Grand Canyon - North Rim or South Rim?

Next August (I know, hot!) my family is going to hike the Grand Canyon. We will be at Zion NP and Bryce Canyon NP beforehand, so the North Rim is convenient. How does the North Kaibab Trail compare to the South Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trail? I know it's longer, and less crowded (only...

Garfield + Franconia Ridge Traverse, 9/12/2009

What are Truman and N. Lafayette? I've been across Franconia Ridge a few times and don't recognize those names. Didn't find them with Google either. Guess I'll have to hike up the stairs and pull out my White Mountain Guide book.

Just realized something. I was a temporary vegan as part of my plan to lose weight. It worked; I went from 173 to 155 in five weeks. So instead of "veganitis" should I have called it veganatrophy?

Thanks for the explanation. Still a bit foggy about how a 160-lb body can exert more than 160 pounds force, but your example is a good one and I know from experience it is correct. In addition to August being my "vegan month" it was "pullup month" and the wide grip pullups were much harder...

I see you are a physics teacher. Can you explain the following to me? I have a hammock I use when backpacking and camping. I read that you shouldn't tie it to AMC leantos because the hammock exerts 600 pounds of force on its supports and might pull the leanto over. How can a hammock with a...
