    Fatality on Moosilauke 3/14-3/15

I was thinking the same. And it's easy to imagine a person having a very tough time finding where the Gorge Brook trail enters the trees in high wind and poor visibility. This is very sad.

    Northern Vermont Hike Advice

Belvedere Mountain is another great hike. You don't indicate time of year, but the loop you can make with the Forester's Trail, LT, and Frank Post Trail is a good one in summer or fall. In winter the road isn't plowed to the trailhead and it gets little to no use. Over in the Lake Willoughby...

Wow, this a trip report for the books!

Wow, that's magnificent. I'm sad that I missed it all those years ago.

    Early May climbs

Mt. Cube on the AT down near Hanover can be a good one that time of year.

Butternut Mtn and South Bowen Attempt (Belvidere Vermont)

Nice job dealing with this. I gave up on my Lightnings some years back after too many failures. In their most spectacular performance the crampon sheared halfway down the east side of Santanoni in about 7 feet of snow. I've been happy on Classic Denalis (no heel lift) since 2014.

Wow, this a trip report for the books!

Always a pad, sleeping bag of some type, and tarp here. Not necessarily a full winter -20F bag but something that in combination with puffy, etc., will help keep one from dying. I've generally left the stove behind in recent years. One thing I'd encourage every serious winter hiker to try is a...

Wow, this a trip report for the books!

Yes, they did OK once they were in a predicament ... that said, I feel like this person had many opportunities to avoid getting in this kind of trouble.

Wheeler Mountain near Lake Willoughby, VT

The route has changed; the new trailhead is reliably accessible in winter. On the other hand, the trail itself is quite a bit longer. Parking lot to summit used to be something like 1.0 (red trail) or 1.3 (white). The new trail starts much farther down the valley, arcs up the slope of the ridge...

    POLL: Your longest day?

A few in the 16+ hour range. Longest by mileage was a Pemi loop with West Bond and North Twin (think I skipped Galehead that time) but by far the most exhausting was a 17 hour solo epic in the Santanonis 11 winters ago. I've got permanent neuropathy in my left hand from that one.

magnesium flare or meteor over 93 in Campton tonight ?

VT Air National Guard has been doing night exercises. Sonic booms over the Northeast Kingdom around that time or a little later, maybe related ...

4 day backpacking trip in April?

Some years it's pretty much out of the question anywhere in northern New England. If March does not see large accumulating snows, though, you might luck out. Four years ago we had a very early melt, and we did three days on the AT between the Main Junction (LT/AT split) and Hanover around the...

    Mt Adams, Saturday 2/20

Yikes! We didn't get onto anything quite as crummy as that. There were a few stretches on Gulfside up above the Air Line junction that were pretty sketchy, but it was generally possible to stay on rocks and/or snow that was reasonably well bonded to what was under it. The worst of the ice we...

    Mt Adams, Saturday 2/20

Nice! Your pics are pretty great; they really capture the drama of the conditions. It's rarely easy up there in winter. We climbed Adams on Tuesday via Randolph Path > Lowe's Path, descending Gulfside > Valley Way. By the looks of it we had gentler weather than you, but the ice was no joke...

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

Just got in from a 60-minute hike up our neighborhood hill ("The Knob") with the kids. The sun is out and the sky is brilliant blue, but temps are dropping and the wind's picking up. No goggles, but full face covering warranted otherwise. Stay safe out there, people -- it's only going to get...

Hiking in the extreme cold this weekend?

We were hoping to do Owl's Head this Sunday, but we're going to scrub it. Too cold, too deep in. It's going to be tough out there. I did a sunset/twilight hike for a couple hours after work yesterday with some friends; it dropped to around +2F while we were out and the wind picked up, and it...

A Surreal Solo Day On the Franconia Range

Great pics. It was a beautiful day. We were on the Twins, and for a while in the morning it looked like we were going to be socked in altogether. When it opened up, though -- wow! Did you get off before the wind picked up? It wasn't too bad until about 2:30, when it really started to crank.
