    Mt. Washington Rescue

I likely saw one of the guys while doing some trail work below Gem Pool on the Ammo on Sunday. (I'm a new co-adopter, helping Raven.) A young guy came rapidly down the trail w/o any pack -- said he had dropped his pack somewhere above, and was heading down to the Cog hiker's lot to retrieve his...

Historical Information about Chris Goetze wanted

I'm looking for historical information about the mountain exploits of Chris Goetze, if anyone can help. Goetze was one of the early "superhikers" in the Whites and Mahoosucs. As far as I know, his 1958 "fastest known time" of 8:06:30 for the Mahoosuc Traverse still stands today, nearly 56 years...

    Is My Tent Fly Ruined?

Had the same thing happen to a 30 year old Sierra Designs tent (that was otherwise still good). I washed the heck out of the fly until all the waterproofing was completely gone. Same for the tent bathtub. Then I coated it with a 1:1 ratio (by weight) of silicone caulk and odorless mineral...

MA Mid-State Trail Through Hike Planning

As far as I can tell, hitchhiking IS legal in Massachusetts, except on the turnpike and other limited access highways.

    Wallface Mountain

Great report. Really captures the essence of bushwhacking for me with "I was completely alive."

    Mahoosuc Range Backpacking Trip 10.24-10.26

Nice report and some speedy hiking. Funny about your earlier accidental 3X through Mahoosuc Notch on your AT through hike.

    Personal Locator Beacons

I often carry one on solo treks, but have never used it. A good website with detailed reviews and tests of PLB's, as well as beacons based on satphones (e.g., Spot), is here: http://www.equipped.org/

Temporary Closure of Lincoln Woods trail

YMMV, but for me, I first check the E. Branch of the Pemi flow at: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?01074520 I have forded the river at 170 CFS near the start of the Bondcliff trail (the OLD start of the Bondcliff Tr.), and while it wasn't hard, it wasn't a total cakewalk either. I have...

Un supported AT thruhiker does half the trail in 30 days

just to clarify, Matt Kirk refers to his attempt as "self-supported," not "unsupported." Unsupported means you carry all your food from the start and only resupply with water on the way (obviously next to impossible for the full AT).

    Pemi Loop 411

There is plenty of water down low, but once you're on the ridges (Bondcliff via Bondcliff Trail, or Franconia Ridge via Osseo Tr.) the water options are quite limited. Yes, water is available at Galehead Hut, and there is also a reliable spring at the start of the path to the Garfield tent site...

    NeverWet to arrive in stores

I'd be very interested to know if a very lightweight nylon windshirt could be turned into a waterproof, yet still extremely breathable raincoat. And in particular whether that would hold up where a pack rubs against it continuously, and after getting soaked with sweat, dirt, body oil, etc. If it...

    Hut Traverse June 15-16, 2013

Before this, I had completed the Hut Traverse only once out of the three attempts. In 2007, I went west to east with a friend, but we encountered high winds at Lakes and had to quit. Two weeks later I completed a solo traverse westbound in 19:25, after sleeping at Carter Notch hut and pushing...

    Steripen Opti (CR123 batteries)

Mine has been reliable, but I always carry spare batteries if I really need it. Be careful taking the cap off. Take it straight off or you can tweak the bulb and break it (I know). Did some temp tests. Did NOT work right out of freezer, DID work out of refrigerator. Sorry, don't remember the...

Some Wildcat ski trails closed to all use until further notice

Looks like you can still take Catapult all the way up. A little steeper than Polecat, but fine really.
