Indeed I did. It just became too much of a time commitment, a long stretch which took more and more time to get into and out of and back home.

Hi All, While I've been a member here for sometime, I've not been an active poster recently. I'm retired and still spend a good deal of time volunteering for the U.S. Forest Service, White Mountain National Forest. I was greatly involved in the early years of the Trailhead Steward program, and...

Retired. Moving to VT in March 2023. Still volunteering in the WMNF. Much of my recent work has been surrounding wildlife management. In particular, my autumn work crews which maintain secluded apple orchards. Usually post those invitations in meetup.com, over-50 group, or contact me to be...

Looking a few good passionate hikers willing to devote a few hours each week to prevent unnecessary search and rescue missions. Trailhead hiker intervention has proven to increase hiker preparedness. It is reducing Search and Rescue missions and won a regional US Forest Service award as an...

    Old Bridle Path or Greenleaf?

Smart choice. Best choice. Nice to see some common sense for safety's sake. Just sayin' that there are too many people who don't turn back and end up calling 911. Thank you!

Trying to come up with something good to say about Hancock Notch Trail in summer

When I took on the trail, it was as lost as Hubbard Brook Tr It had no maintenance for seven years. We began from the east. Mostly tackling thousands of puckerbush. The heavy crew came in and cleared the large storm damage. Washouts and river erosion was logged for future work. Last fall and...

Trying to come up with something good to say about Hancock Notch Trail in summer

Ok, I'll bite. I'm the maintainer for the entire length of the HNT, for the past 2.5 years. I can't argue with your trail characterizations. What i can offer is some background color. - While it does not matter to you, the HNT is split down the in half by the divison of Pemi ranger district...

Wildlife clearing maintenance in the White Mountains

We still are looking for a leader for our Wildlife Clearing maintenance work. We're basically just clearing moderate sized new growth from mowed areas in the forests. There is one area on the Kanc and one just north of Jackson NH. This is simple stuff that needs loppers. The area is flat. I...

    Head net for bugs

I've noticed that black flies will not get in my eyes if Ihave glasses on. Apparently they come in on a straight trajectory. BTW, I swear by the two-sided deer fly sticky tape. I have harvested more than 60 in a single hike. Kinda gross, but not a single bite. You just gotta put up with...

    Head net for bugs

It didn't work for me. Just goes to show that how a body's chemistry interacts with various subtances can make a repellant more or less effective. Much like perfume, that may have a different fragrance on different people.

    Volunteering in the WMNF

Thanks Raven. I'm fortunate that for the past year I've been "semi-retired" and have put in several hundred hours of volunteer work, largely administrative during the winter months. But it gave me the opportunity to see the bigger picture. You're spot on that just publicizing these...

    Volunteering in the WMNF

Some of you are aware of my efforts as a volunteer to recruit a lot more volunteers forest-wide. The deeper I dig, the more I find. The FS dreams of many volunteers, but doesn't have the staff to manage it. So I'm pursuing a "volunteers manage other volunteers" approach. Like Bruce does for...

Hiker Unplanned overnight in the Pemi

This strikes me as a time when a Spot Beacon would have utility. You could fire it off and include the "I'm OK" status. This would save a SAR response. I have an ACR beacon, so I can only summon a rescue response. Thing I don't like about Spot is the ongoing subscription charge.

Presentation: White Mountain National Forest Volunteer Opportunities (Plymouth)

This is a repeat of the February Chelmsford, MA session. Did you know that New Hampshire Fish and Game conducts over 200 Search and Rescue missions each year and more than half of those rescues occur in the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest? Are you interested in giving back to the...
