Ski/snowshoe into Square Ledge from the Kanc?

Thanks Doug and Kevin. I will wait to see whether the rain Sunday evening fell as snow in the mountains. Gracie has been in mourning and could use a good, long day of exercise in the woods to cheer her up.

Ski/snowshoe into Square Ledge from the Kanc?

I was thinking to X-C ski in to Square Ledge via Oliverian Brook Trail, Passaconaway Cutoff, etc., switching to snowshoes when necessary. Does anyone know the recent trail conditions? Including brook crossings? Has anyone done this before? Thanks, Elizabeth P.S. I have not posted on VFTT...

June is the cruelest month . . .

I'm enjoying the replies so far. The take-away I get from this is: 1) Yes, June is cruel. 2) We are so lucky to live in this beautiful part of the world, even in June. My beef with the month is that while early spring has ticks and black flies, these have mostly disappeared by summer, when...

June is the cruelest month . . .

Black flies still out in force in central N.H. Ticks are at their worst. Mosquitos have been around now for a couple of weeks. And now, today, I see that the deer flies are already out and HUNGRY. I don't remember deer flies emerging this early before. Argh!

National Trails Day basically ignored in NH

Craeg, the lack of participation you experienced may be because there are so many Trails Day events going on on in the Upper Valley, so the labor gets diffused. I always join our Town Conservation Commission group for the day, and we generally get around 8 - 14 volunteers (in a town of...

Thanks for all of the responses on my white Trillium erectum and for the answer to the fungal mystery - witch's butter. I should note that the trillium is near the site of an old farmstead (last occupied in the 1950s). However, all of the other trilliums in the area are the purple variety. I...

    Morgan/Percival questions

I did the loop clockwise; though I thought afterwards that counterclockwise would have been better. You should note that there is a bypass of the ladder route on the west side of Morgan summit, useful if you are hiking with dogs. Also the "cliff" route on Percival is easier for dogs than the...

AMC 4000-Footer Club Welcomes 10,000th Member

I was at the awards dinner. Everyone gave lots of cheers to the guy who was #10,000. Love of big, round numbers somehow just comes naturally. Sure, the guy didn't do anything more than the other thousands of finishers; but it was fun to cheer for him anyhow. FUN is the point after all, isn't...
