    Alpine Area Protection Photos Request

Hoping a few of you might have some pics of the methods used to protect alpine areas and sensitive vegetation, etc. that you could share with me for a friend of mine in the conservation field. Below is his email to me describing his needs. "For a work project, I'm looking to compile a hearty...

Shuttle for Rocky Peak Ridge Traverse - Friday, October 4

Great! Yeah, the Rocky Peak Ridge traverse was awesome - though it was raining a little by the time we got to Giant. We also missed the views from the top of Sawteeth the next day, but had extraordinary weather otherwise. Two of the three of us finished our 46ers on Sawteeth. I had needed nine...

Shuttle for Rocky Peak Ridge Traverse - Friday, October 4

Apologies to Daniel Daniel, So sorry I did not see this, but I was not on the forum after I got up there and had very little time online at all. I never even checked my Yahoo mail, only my main address. However, we did use [email protected] as Neil suggested and even ended up with a fourth...

Shuttle for Rocky Peak Ridge Traverse - Friday, October 4

Thanks. I'll try that. I had sent him a pm within the ADK High Peaks forum, but no response. I will try this address though. Rick

Shuttle for Rocky Peak Ridge Traverse - Friday, October 4

Hello, I am having trouble finding a shuttle for myself and two buddies to do a traverse of Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant a little over a week from now. The lady who owns the Keene Valley hostel will be out of town that day. Otherwise, she could have done it. Does anyone out there know of any...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

You have a very nice New York list of peaks on there! Looks like several imminent list completions! Rick

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Likewise, John has been nice enough to add several peaks for me as well that were unnamed and had less than 300' prominence. It seems he generally will if it has an unofficial name in print somewhere or is on a long established list. He added Southwest Hunter for me as well as 5 or 6 peaks on...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

That's why I love LOJ. John Kirk has already done all the work, I believe probably using some software like WinProm perhaps. He has already calculated the elevation, prominence, isolation, saddles, essentially everything for every single peak in his database. It is really quite amazing! As for...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

It's a great list! And a great idea. Though I may possibly do an Adirondack trip with a couple buddies this coming Spring, it will probably be next Christmas before Leanne and I get back up that way together. Possibly earlier, because she would like to visit family more than once a year, but...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Oh. Views and Brews. Neat! I don't drink but my girlfriend would absolutely love this. She really enjoys good beer. And hiking. Finally a list she might be enthusiastic about! I don't know how much of this I can peruse on my SLOW computer at work, but it looks like many of the hikes are not to...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Thanks Mark. Glad you like it. Yeah, I've added quite a few lists to LOJ. Love that website. Are you a member? I'm considering doing a "Northeast Classic Peaks" list next, obviously a very subjective list, generally based on Jared Gange's excellent "100 Classic Hikes of the Northeast". It will...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Congratulations Tom! O.K. I took Tom's advice and finished the Catskill 35 Finest list. After looking at several maps, books, and online sources I learned that the northern and western edges of the Catskills are quite vague and uncertain, but it would seem that by the time you reach the...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Very well Tom. After I get home I shall pull out some maps and books and decide for myself where the outer edges of the Catskills lie. I was unable to do that at work this morning when I made the list. BTW, you can indeed see the list as it now appears by going to the links at the bottom of my...

    Catskill 35 Most Prominent Peaks

Hello, Any Catskill experts out there? I made the post below on the Catskill 3500 forum and figured it couldn't hurt to post it here as well. Any input would be appreciated. Rick ******************************************************* Hi everyone, Just got back home to Virginia on Sunday...

    Peekamoose and table 12-22-2010

No change from the previous report. Zero snow to about 2,200' and 3-4" up high with a booted track. Only a couple patches of ice, nothing that isn't easily avoided.

Alander Mountain via Alander Brook, South Taconic, and Robert Brook Trails 12-20-2010

Easy walking in snow up to 4 inches deep. No real trouble spots anywhere other than occasional icy spots.

Brace Mountain via South Taconic Trail 12-20-2010

Snow only 3-4 inches deep up high and easy walking, but very icy in spots on the steep section along the stream near the bottom. Traction devices were not need for the ascent, but may have been worth the trouble to put on for a couple of short sections on the descent even though I did not use them.
