    Canoe Carts

I got a used double jogging stroller a few years back. I took all that pesky baby holding fabric off, and removed the front wheel. I've pushed and pulled my canoe or kayak on it a couple hundred miles over some decently rough terrain. I also have one of the foldable kayak carts with the eight...

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

I'd bet that if the SERE facility was involved in the disappearance of a hiker the body wouldn't turn up. I looked at a map on the Maine Warden Facebook page a while back (linked earlier in this thread, but no longer accessible), and it looked to me like she may have headed off the trail...

    Water Treatment

A weekend warrior with a shellfish allergy would likely have a problem. One of the things shellfish have that cause reactions is iodine. Something to keep in mind if you're in a group or offering water to someone you don't know.

New AMC Hut in Crawford Notch???

They make a few helicopter trips to each hut every spring and fall as well. They might be including the rent (or taxes?) on their Boston office in the 'lodging' line items, too.

    Thoreau Falls Bridge Removal?

I bet the cables from the last bridge they ripped out are still out in the woods. I'd bet a group of five or six people could string them up across that brook assuming they had a day without a ranger bothering them...

    Boots vs Trail Runners

It's possible. Big beard, 5'4". I'm also about 145 lbs. I wouldn't be surprised if weight was a huge factor in footwear preference. If I put another 70 pounds in my pack, I don't think my ankles would appreciate it...

    Boots vs Trail Runners

I'll volunteer! I did an out and back to Owl's Head in sandals with full overnight gear once along the fisherman's trail. I've also gone up falling waters and over to old bridle path barefoot with overnight gear. I have freakish hobbit feet that are as long as a 7 1/2 but I need to wear a 10 1/2...

Reminder - NH - Hands free device while driving law in effect

Even if you're pulled over in the breakdown lane, I think. I saw something that said if the keys were in the ignition, car running or not. They'll be looking hard for a while, too, just to 'raise awareness'.

    Vertigo

I've had issues with vasovagel syncopy since I was a little kid. The part of my brain that is supposed to consistently regulate my blood pressure gets flaky sometimes, but it's mostly predictable when I'll have an issue. The symptoms range from light headedness all the way to tunnel vision then...

    Cross country ski boots?

These free skis are starting to get expensive! Curse my hobbit feet! I doubt if I got a regular width boot they'd be controllable on any downhill, there'd be a few inches in front of my toes giving me too much play in the boot where the binding actually touches. I think my dogs would prefer my...

    Cross country ski boots?

It seems like it would be pretty easy to find them, but I've got some weird feet. They're as long as 7 1/2, but I wear 10 1/2 EEEE shoes, and those don't leave me any room for more than a thin pair of socks because of the freakish wideness of my feet. Anybody know of anywhere to find super wide...

I wish I had that much time to hike! He must be a happy guy.

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

Plans needed to change at the last minute, so I never made it to the Ranger Station to get any clarification on how the 200' rule is enforced regarding water and such...

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

It should be discussed! I'll see what, if any, clarification I can get from the folks that would be enforcing the rules when I talk to them this weekend and report back when I get home. It's our forest, we should know without a doubt what might get us disciplined. I've read everything I could...

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

That's just rude. I'd imagine there's a large bon fire when they come back and clear it out, too, regardless of how dry the woods are on that particular day. I'd put some poison ivy and wild roses in there... :D

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

I'm just going off what the ranger told me. I didn't push the question and say "200 feet from which waters exactly?". He said '200 feet from water', so there might be some confusion in the enforcement. I'd bet with the decision to remove a bunch of bridges pretty recently, they'd be more than...

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

I called the ranger station a few days ago. He said you had to be 200' from black brook to be legal, so I'm guessing that second picture would at least get you a stern talking to if one of them happened to walk up on you camping there. I'm sure there's either a good established legal or very...

Bugs on the way to The Bonds?

Anybody camp out that way recently that wants to share a bug report? Just hiking through bug reports are useful too. We'll be bringing DEET, so please don't mock me. Any good (legal) camping spots that already exist would be appreciated as well! I've heard rumors of a few and plan on talking to...

    Bear activity at Guyot

I was out there last year. The caretaker dude said they had a bear box because they needed it.

    Making Dehydated Foods

This is very true. I tried dehydrating poached chicken once, I boiled it for half an hour, then let it sit in that water for a couple of days bringing it up to a boil every morning and afternoon in a vain attempt to make it easier to chew than boot leather. Ground beef is a pretty good place to...
