    Ready, willing, and Abol 11/1/17

Little Brown Mushroom needed the Baxter 4Ks for Nov, and I needed to get out on a hike of substance. We met up in Millinocket and headed to the gate to await opening. We signed in at 6:20 and headed up the Abol slide trail. There was a lot of water flowing in the trail lower down but careful...

    Caribou Valley Road

CVR was being worked on from the 6th to the 18th. The bridges have been fixed up (new decks on top of the old I think). There's a few culverts that still require caution but in general it's in great shape. Evidence of surveying all the way out to the pond.

Caribou Pond Trail is located in Carrabassett Valley, Maine

Steve and I were in there a week and a half ago. Road is a bit rutted and there's a few sinkholes near the culverts. Overall it's in decent shape. I think you drive almost anything in there with care. FYI there was 2-3ft of snow along the ridge from Sugarloaf to Abraham. Can't speak to the AT...

North Brother, Fort, South Brother, Coe - March 6, 2017

Wow! Sounds like you hit the weather jackpot. We have been trying to get in there but have had to cancel out due to the cold and/or snow. From your description a lot of the mess we hit in Dec is still there. Hoping to head in next weekend but Mom Nature looks like she is trying once again to...

    North Brother

I think the "wet, heavy snow" of Nov 30th stuck like glue to cause all the bendovers. It looked like some crazy Hollywood set crew had gone nuts with styrofoam guns. It did not knock off easily. We were the first to sign in for the last three weeks so I would assume the whole area (S Bro, Coe...

    North Brother

They are logging on Grand Lake Rd so we were able to park about two miles in. Snow a bit thin on way in. New bunkhouse at Nesowadenunk didn't look ready for occupancy. Tote Rd was skiable with occasional thin areas. Marston was spikable up to the intersection. From there on it was snowshoe...

    Mt. Washington Rescue

At one of the trailheads for Mt Monadnock there is actually a sign which reads: "BE AWARE OF SUNSET TIME. IT WILL BE DARK AFTER SUNSET." Another penetrating glimpse into the obvious.

Rangeley High Peaks 10+1 - Day 1: South Crocker, North Crocker, Redington

I think we ran into you guys as we were heading over to N Crocker. Either that or several groups took a similar detour via the boundary swath. We got back to the car with just some light showers. ☔️

    Three Baxter Peaks 8/17/16

By doing North Brother in the morning it gave us clear skies by the time we reached Baxter. Timing is everything!

    Three Baxter Peaks 8/17/16

My friend Steve (Little Brown Mushroom) is a better writer than I. Here's his write up: I suppose all my ADK friends have wondered what has become of me these days The last two months have been spent doing Vermont and Maine Peaks. Maine has been a pleasant surprise. Trails are well maintained...

The Caribou Valley Six Pack 7/19/16

Little Brown Mushroom had never visited Caribou Valley before. As a resident of Maine I felt Obligated to extend the hand of hospitality and do this loop with him. Ok, truth be told I love this hike and was glad he had finished his NY Grid so we could get busy in Maine! I was spending the week...

Anyone use a snowshoe with a Boa binding?

I have a pair of Garneau Black Everests that I picked up cheap. The binding is fast and very comfortable. I always bring enough stuff to repair if necessary since they look fragile. I did a few Presi traverses in them and eventually fatigued the metal to failure though the binding mechanism was...

    Garfield, GH, Twins loop. Direction?

The descent off Garfield heading to GH generally warrants packing your crampons. Steep hard ice. A friend just started for the Twins first and got turned back by there being no log anymore and high water levels.

The Year in Review - Peakbragging 2015!

Completed twelve consecutive months of great range traverses. Did a double Presi. Finally did a Mahoosuc traverse. All good. Got Lyme disease. Not so good.

Vose Spur to The Captain 10/11/15

Steve needed a break from the Grid and I just needed to get out. We decided to pick off a few hundred highest peaks we missed on our last outing. We spotted my truck at the end of Sawyer River Rd and went back to the fire rd. The fire road is a great change from the Signal Ridge trail. Once we...

    Vose Spur via Carrigain #100/NEHH

Congrats on the NE100. Some great peaks on that list. Steve and I will be up that route in a week or two. Will keep an eye out for your pole.

Whack a mole; Nancy, Bemis, Anderson, Lowell

Hockeypuck, we were almost to the Cascades when I finally realized I had totally missed the turn. Since I hadn't bushwhacked in a while I convinced myself that continuing on made perfect sense. In hindsight it would have been worth it to backtrack and take the trail up Bemis. Good old hindsight...

Whack a mole; Nancy, Bemis, Anderson, Lowell

TEO, it's too funny you mention skipping Duck Pond Peak. Last time I was in there Lady Gray and I did Lowell and Anderson. Within an hour my friend Charlie was asking why we had skipped DPP since we had been right there. I joked with Steve about it and we decided if we bagged every peak that's...

Whack a mole; Nancy, Bemis, Anderson, Lowell

Una,It was the first bushwack of any scale for either one of us for a couple years. Amazing how quickly I had forgotten what a violent sport it is!!
