    Franconia Ridge

Sat 5/21 Found a wristwatch between Little Haystack and Liberty Spring Trail. Also found a knife at one of the popular lunch spots on the summit of Flume. Let me know if one of these items might be yours...

ever see wild pigs in NH ?

A man and his dog have nothing to fear from a healthy wild boar. They are just as wary as our native NH wildlife and will not stick around if they know you are in the area. Like a Black Bear for instance. I know of one actual experience in Grafton County where a friend of mine went to feed...

Snow Pack Melt Predictions and Guesses for 2015

November is a walk in the proverbial park. April... not so much.

    K-9 W48 Finish

Kibo took advantage today of a very favorable Equinox Day forecast to finish her Winter peaks on the summits of Adams (47) and Madison (48). The Observatory had it spot on with temps in the teens and low/no wind. Other than some lumpiness in the vicinity of Valley Way Tentsite, the trails were...

Leaving only footsteps - think again: 100 meter 'death zone' on either side of trails

I share the point of view that Grey J has shared here. I'm working on a theory, though, that repeated trapping and GPS collaring of theatened wolverines MAY negatively impact their populations. The impact of a particular species passing through an area inhabited by another/other species is...

    Hancocks 1/29/15

With today being the clear pick of the week weatherwise, Kibo and I decided to break out the Hancocks via Hancock Notch, Cedar Brook, and Hancock Loop Trails. Not much new snow or drifting down low but wore snowshoes car to car. Went Counter-clockwise and ran into first significant drifts...

    Rangers taking pictures of plates?

Curiously, the only time I've been pinched (and fined) resting in my vehicle at a trailhead wasn't here.... It was in Colorado.

    Snow totals

It actually snowed somewhere? I don't have 12" in a drift! Probably got 1-3" in Rumney... Steve

    Freezing freaking water bottles

IMO, you won't do better than the EMS insulated bottle carriers despite all the methods you're going to hear about now involving wool socks and the like... I carry two of them to get through virtually any day hike. In one I keep a Hydroflask vacuum bottle that provides a hot drink for 6-8 hrs...

    Isolation: Engine Hill Bushwhack

I will say that this year's Engine Hill route is quite pleasant. Less thrashing through thick stuff than some past iterations.

    hiking with prescription sunglasses

In 45 years of wearing glasses and goggles for outdoor activities, the best anti-fog product I've found so far (and I feel as though I've tried everything) is called FOGTECH. REI sells it or find it on Amazon...

    K9X3 Finish

The forecast for a spectacular Fall?! day was too much to resist, so we decided to cross off the last two peaks on our Fall list and at the same time accompany Kibo on the last summit of her 3X48. The targets of the day would be Madison and Adams utilizing Valley Way both directions. Kibo had...

Hiking Kilimamjaro - Help with companies

When my wife and I went we used Rothschild Safaris on the recommendation of a friend. If I ever get to go back again, I will do the same. Leora was fantastic and everything she arranged for both the climb and safari was perfect. She is based in the US and all our dealings were directly with...

Asolo Boot Longevity? – Read This!

I had a pair of 520's as well that were used heavily from the moment they came out of the box until their premature demise. I loved every thing about the boot but the midsole rather quickly broke down while the sole and uppers were still uncompromised. I won't be spending my dollars on a...

Free Mt Everest lecture by Ed Webster

That's a lot of notice, but it gives one enough time to read Ed's book before the talk. The lecture is naturally limited by time constraints, so having the whole backstory will just add to your enjoyment. (Then take it to get signed!) Highly recommended.

    Tripyramids

Taking Scaur Ridge Trail off of the Livermore Trail is a great way to do Tripyramids if you still want to go from the WV side. I sometimes go up this way, skip the North Slide, and loop back over South Slide. It might skew the love/hate relationship a bit to the better.
