Giant, Sept. 11, from just South of Chapel Pond

1st 2/3 of trail: excellent conditions. I was wondering why the DEC was mentioning mud and water. Last 1/3 was muddy in places, watery in places, but nothing extreme, very easily handled. Only 1 part had steep, wet rock and needed care on the descent. Bugs: some teeny, tiny black bugs at...

    Algonquin, Iroquois, Wright, July 30

All trails in excellent condition. Didn't really stop on Algonquin or Iroquois for very long. There was no wind and some very small insects (no-see-ums?) on top of Wright. They didn't seem to be biting, but were annoying (although no one else looked like they were being bothered by them!)...

Saddleback, Basin, Haystack, from the Garden, July 24

Conditions: Very good. Some mud, here and there, some wet rocks, mostly avoidable. No bugs on summit of Basin (a bit windy), plenty on top of Haystack (no wind). These are good peaks to do in one outing, as they're close together, but it is a big day. If doing it in this direction, be aware...

Nippletop, up from Lake Road, down via Dial

Conditions: Excellent, only 1 muddy spot past the "lakes" at Elk Pass, perhaps 10 feet total. Black flies weren't bad at all. We wore light colored clothing and were mostly left alone at the summit, until more people showed up, bringing some black flies with them. While this is a long hike...

    Giant, Ridge Trail, June 18

Mostly excellent, dry until the last 0.7 mile, and then a couple places are wet, requiring care during descending. However there seem to be trails in the woods to bypass tricky bits, and the tricky bits are short and not very numerous. No bugs on the way up or down, but black flies were at...

    Gothics, Cable Route, June 10

Mainly dry from the Garden parking to the DEC outpost. The Orebed trail was about 1/3 wet and muddy along the flat part. When it got steeper, there were plenty of wet rocky areas. Above the stairs it was fairly wet, making the going a bit delicate at times. After the split for Gothics, the...

Washington, up Ammonoosuc, down Jewell, June 4

Perfect conditions, dry trails, no bugs. A few blowdowns on Jewell, most can be stepped over and one has a trail around it. At the bottom of Jewell, we took the cutoff to the cog railway, as we there's now a hiker's parking lot just below the cog parking. The end of the trail (or beginning if...

    Noonmark, May 23

Almost perfect conditions. 2 areas near the summit that were wet (on rock), the first was avoidable on the left going up (we avoided it going down). The second is just a bit higher, needs a bit of care while descending. No bugs noted today. Fabulous day, were expecting more crowds, but was...

    Lafayette, Bridle Path, April 17

Icy patches starting very low, but could be bare booted until about 15 minutes before the hut. At that point 2 of the 3 of us had put on microspikes. The least experienced, who had microspikes on, went up a very steep part and slid about 20 feet down until she was stopped by some bushes and me...

Mt. Mansfield, Sunset Ridge, April 10, 2016

Conditions: Snow, lots of it!! Special equipment needed: Stabilizers and poles helpful, gaiters too. Imagine our surprise, snow on the road up to the unopened gate, about 4 or 5 inches down low where we parked, more up high, 1-2 feet. After barely any snow in the Adirondacks last month, we...

    Mt. Phelps, March 13

On the way to Marcy Dam it was half ice and half mud in the morning. At the end of a fantastic, warm day, it was about 85% mud on the way back from the dam. The rest was mostly ice, with a couple dry areas and some mud. We used microspikes from after the high river bridge to the summit. On...

    Cascade March 6

ICE, all the way through (apart from the top, of course). We started with microspikes, and changed to crampons after about 25 minutes. Most people we saw were in microspikes, a couple with crampons and some bare boot. Personally, I found crampons to be very helpful, more secure, easier and...

Pyramid Peak, Feb. 22, from the Golf parking

Excellent conditions throughout, soft packed. Good quality snowshoes, with crampons required. Crampons can also be useful. Was supposed to be a Gothics loop, but some lessons learned: a hiking group is only as strong as the weakest member, good equipment matters in winter, excellent fitness...

Algonquin, Jan, 24, from the Loj

Perfect conditions, mostly hard packed. One tricky icy spot about 1/2 way up. Icy, as always at the top. We put on microspikes right away, makes life easier. Crampons went on at the steep bit shortly after the cut-off for Wright. Some people were using microspikes and snowshoes at the top...

Mount Hunger, Waterbury Trail, Dec. 27

Overall in very good shape. Mainly packed corn snow interspersed with some bare areas of wet leaves, mud and rocks in the lower, flatter parts. There are a couple trees to climb over, under or around, and several fir tree branches that have broken off from the trees. A couple icy bits on the...

Camel's Hump, up Forest City, LT, down burrows Trail, Dec. 26

Overall not great trail conditions. The connector trail from the Burrows parking was icy, so we put on our micro spikes. Forest City Trail alternated between packed snow and bare spots which were mainly wet leaves. Higher up and on LT it was mostly packed snow and was fine. I put on crampons...

Mt. Katahdin, Oct. 11, up Hamlin Ridge, down H. Taylor

Small amount of ice once on the plateau and heading towards the summit of Baxter, but very minimal. Minimal ice on knife edge, easily avoided. No special equipment needed. Fantastic day, in and out of clouds, always with a view to one side or the other, and no wind at all at the summit...

Gothics, Marcy, from Garden, July 5 & 6

July 5: Trail to Johns Brook Lodge: excellent condition Orebed Trail: Excellent, except for 1 wet bit slightly above new stairs Cables Route Gothics: Excellent except for short wet bit near the start, and wet, muddy patches along the flat part shortly before the summit. July 6: Phelps...

Photos Of Six Husbands / Sphinx Trail And King Ravine

I was on 6 Husbands 2 days ago. The last time I was there was 3 or 4 years ago and I remember a tricky, exposed part. However, 2 days ago, there was a 5th ladder and I didn't notice any tricky parts, so I guess the new ladder takes care of that part.
