    Estimating Hiking Time

Interesting. I've always used the 2 miles per hour plus 1/2 hour per 1000 feet elevation gain on the ascent but on the descent always just used the 2 mph method. No extra time for elevation on the descent. So to me it would still equate to 5.5 hours. Perhaps I've been wrong all these years(since...

    Estimating Hiking Time

    Wouldn't that only be 5.5 hours? 8.6*.5 +2400/1000*.5 = 4.3 +1.2

    Monadnock State Park And Parking

No I'm not 65 yet so don't get a free pass. I just checked my log. The last time my wife went with me was Dec 2019. Maybe it was different then? before covid?

    Monadnock State Park And Parking

OK fair enough . I have only gone in by myself with my pass and never had reason to ask about more than one non passholder. Was only going by the general NH park link I provided. Actually I just remembered this. When I have taken my wife over a few times I got in free and they charged her $5...

    Monadnock State Park And Parking

Actually the individual season pass is $60 and only lets you in. The family pass is the one that lets 2 adults and up to 4 minors in. It is $105 for residents ans $120 for non residents. I always just get the individual. https://www.nhstateparks.org/planning/schedule-and-fees/passes-promotions

    Monadnock State Park And Parking

I live 15 minutes from Monadnock and hike it once a week and was just up there yesterday. If you have a NH state parks pass (which I do) I simply drive in without a reservation and no fees at all. Even when the sign at the end of the headquarters road says "park full reservations required". They...

Is there an uptick in using small sleds to descend?

I saw 3 or 4 of them just yesterday on Monadnock. I may be a curmudgeon too but I don't like them. Several of us had kicked in some nice footholds ascending on the steep sections only to be smoothed over and undone by these sleds. Even worse if the packed trail gets rain and/or ices over then...

    2020 Grid and Related Finishers

Larry is now closer to 8000 summits of Monadnock I believe. He did however move to Gorham a few years ago and now is a trail adopter for Madison. Not sure exactly which trail. I have climbed it (Monadnock) about 400 times because I only live 15 minutes away. I also run into another guy I've come...

    Nova Scotia In March

Was up along the Cabot trail 3 year ago. The roads are modern and fine getting there. Can't speak to Halifax specifically. We didn't get over that way. The coast line of Nova Scotia is beautiful but the 2 times we have been there were in perfect September weather. The people were very friendly...

Darn Tough Annual Factory Sale - this weekend and next weekend

Yeah we blew thru the 10% discount threshold in about 10 minutes. The sun felt great when we got out and we hoofed it backed to the car much quicker than waiting for the shuttle bus. We did dress warm enough but feet still got a little cold in that tent which was snow/ice covered on the ground...

Darn Tough Annual Factory Sale - this weekend and next weekend

Was there @ 8:30 myself. rode the shuttle bus over and arrived at warming tent around 8:45. Over an hour to get in but well worth it. Never been to one before. It was 10 deg there this morning. By the time we checked out around 11 the line was 3 times longer just to get to the warming tent...

Your welcome. First post but maybe one of the longest lurkers on record. Been reading threads for years and years. CMC sounds like a very good choice. I live in the Monadnock region and my wife is an RN of 33 years and I think she would agree with you!
