    Fall Foliage

I'll be up on the 14th, in the southern area. Maybe I will luck out and get "peak" colors.

Concord, NH trails for day hikes

Even an hour might be pushing it and I'm just looking for about a 2hr hike MAX. Although if it's something between Concord (where I'm staying) and Rochester I might be able to hit something short after spending time taking Mom to doctor's appointments. It's mostly a mental health thing I need...

Concord, NH trails for day hikes

I'm heading up to NH next month to take care of my mom for a bit. I won't have time to go into the mountains but I would like to be able to squeeze in short hikes close to Concord just to get into nature. Trails that are 3-5 miles, whether out and back or loops (preferably) would be great. Can...

Should be an interesting "Foliage Season" to say the least!

Well, looks like my trip is probably going to be the third week in October but it's not completely in my control. If there's still leaves in bright colors then I will be lucky.

Podcast episode about the April 2019 avalanche fatality on Mt Washington

Thanks! Just downloaded it to listen to later. While I avoid backpacking in snow/winter I do find learning through others errors or even just bad luck valuable.

    Mt Guyot Rescue

a high boot will not prevent an ankle break and may actually increase the odds. I wear only trail runners after many years in boots and have better traction than in stiff boots and no longer suffer any of the pains and injuries I used to have.

Should be an interesting "Foliage Season" to say the least!

I was hoping for an actual, you know, prediction, possibly by region to be included, as to the colors. I usually try to go up mid October since we moved south.

saving this post as I am planning on going to Glacier next summer

This article is reason why people get in trouble using the internet to select hikes

and other than a few warnings about trails being "slippery when wet" not one mention of possible rapid temperature changes or the disparity in weather at the start of these trails versus the high points.

    Lots of Saturday Rescues

And this is why I always hike with a "full pack" when in the Whites or similar areas.

    Campground Hosting

The place I was at, half the RV sites were out of service or reserved for "admin" use - like when someone was unable to vacate on time so we had to move someone coming in. Of the 38 sites, 19 were not reservable and the 2 "admin" sites would show as FCFS but we were not allowed to rent them out...

    Campground Hosting

I worked as a gatehouse attendant for about 5 months at a Corps of Engineers campground. 2 days on, 6 days off. You could trade days but if you got screwed because someone left before working your days you had traded, you were screwed and had to work them. Happened to me! We got to live there...
