I've been back home from WA for the past week visiting friends and family and was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to get back to the Daks to add another peak to the list. Jeff and I tossed around a few ideas involving Big Slide/RPR or Wright/Algonquin/Iroquois but ultimately settled on Big Slide as a loop from the Garden.
We hit the trail at 9:30 a.m. and saw a grand total of 3 people as we made our way up and over The Brothers. It was rather cold in the trees but the sun warmed us whenever we emerged on to open ground. We didn't need snowshoes but found crampons to be a must as soon as the terrain steepened (though microspikes would probably cut it).
On the summit our feeling of being alone would run out as we shared our views with 14 other people, 12 of whom had come up from the John's Brook area. We had a nice chat with a couple dudes from Albany who's tracks we had been following all day and then descended down towards John's Brook and out to The Garden followed by a victory soup and sandwich at the Noonmark Diner.
Another fine day in the Daks. 14/46 from WA State. Full set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7696568@N04/sets/72157628889273987/with/6705350837/
Special thanks to Adventurous who was kind enough to help me get connected with this forum, which can be a challenge from WA state and something I've been trying to do for a while.
