Conditions: Can report that the Great Gulf Trail is very well broken out from the trailhead up to The Bluff.

Also, can report that the 0.8 mile segment of the Osgood Trail between the Osgood Cutoff and the Great Gulf Trail is broken out (but not quite as well as the Great Gulf Trail).

The 0.6 mile Osgood Cutoff required breaking out. However, I broke trail alone and was wearing tailless MSRs. And so, the ‘break-out’ sort of resembles sasquatch/yeti prints, rather than a smooth continuous furrow!! Not pretty, but NOT post-holed!!

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes are highly recommended (for traction if nothing else), and trekking poles are very useful.

Comments: This nearly 6 mile loop is a fantastic snowshoe hike requiring only a modest amount of effort. The upper portions of this loop provide some stunning views into the Great Gulf and surrounding high peaks of the Presidential Range. On the lower portions of this loop, there are long stretches of trail that parallel the Peabody River which provides for some very scenic winter views. There are also several small brooks and lots of open forest along the way to add to the scenery.

Also on the trail today, I had the pleasant surprise of meeting two friends from Lincoln, NH who are also avid hikers. Sort of put frosting on the cake for this already enjoyable day!
