My daughter and her husband rented a cabin just outside RMNP for the long holiday weekend and invited us to join them. The views from the cabin were amazing, but the hiking was just wonderful. From that location, it is possible to hike into the park without having to drive in. The trailhead was literally 1 mile down the road from the cabin and allowed me to hike into the Park in relative solitude. Another day I drove about 25 miles south and hiked to the boundary of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. My destination in both cases were frozen lakes with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The winter certainly cuts down on the number of people you will see, plus there are no reservations or other odious restrictions in place.
