... Via Baker Rd., Quinntown Rd., Kodak Trail (the AT up from the south), Cross Rivendell Trail.

Date of Hike: 2/22/14

Trail Conditions: Baker Rd. is well-trod and fast. the first 1/2 mile or so up Quinntown Rd. is pretty sloppy; from there on it's a snow machine superhighway. Kodak Trail was 12-18" with nasty crust (not heavy enough to walk on though!) in places and 3-4' drifts here and there, and hard to follow a lot of the way; now it has one set of idiot tracks (at least they're easy to follow!), until someone's fool enough to follow. Cross Rivendell is well broken and easy sailing.

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes and poles (I use 30" Lightning Ascents and wish I'd had the tail extensions).

Comments: I started south from the end of Baker Rd. at 11:30; made it to Quinntown Rd. (1 3/4 mi) a little after noon and to the AT trailhead (another 1 1/4 mi.) by 12:30. 4 1/2 hours from there up to Cube, just over 3 miles of tough but beautiful slogging with only a couple 5-minute "breaks" wandering around looking for the trail (I've been up it dozens of times, summer and winter, and still it's very tough in spots). I can't tell you how happy I was to see that the Cross Rivendell Trail was well-broken; made it back to the car in about a hour, just in time not to have to break out the lamp.

Another awesome half-day in the woods!
