hey everyone-
just a quick question: do you think that an ice axe would be a requirement for a winter ascent of mount osceola? we're doing both peaks on monday and was wondering if i should invest in an axe.

thanks.

Most of the winter climbers seem to use ski poles for New England mountain trail peaks, but an ice axe works OK too. For bushwhacks, I find the ice axe is better for knocking snow off spruce branches, and for pulling yourself up steep inclines by hooking the axe on a tree trunk. I definitely recommend the ice axe for the winter Adirondack 4000 footers.
