View Full Version : Gulf of Slides - 3/27/04

Skinned up GoS trail on Saturday morning with a friend. Low snow cover made it tough in some places but I never had to take off the skis. By the time we got to the bottom of the gullies, the thick fog had cleared revealing very good snow cover above timberline - but the heavy rains on Friday night had turned everything to thick mashed potatoes.

Fog rolled in as we began our switchbacks up the south snowfields and completely engulfed us. We stopped a quarter of the way up and decided to head down from there. The snow was just too heavy and visibility was about 20 feet. The GoS trail is looking thin at this point - lots of undermined stream crossings and so many rocks that it looked like a granite mogul trail in some places. A few more days of warm weather and you'll have to hike it in a lot of spots.

This shot was taken two minutes before the fog rolled in.
And here's what the trail looks like.

Had you heard about the massive slide in Tuckerman before you headed out that morning? I wonder if news had filtered back to Pinkham before the morning crowd had started up.

We hadn't heard anything when we checked in at Pinkham Notch. They said the conditions would be pretty good in GoS. There was no word of the slide.
