View Full Version : AT/LT VT Route 9 to Kelley Stand

4-5 August, 2008

Trail Conditions: Wet (apres deluge, after all). The southern half has a few more wallows and bogs than the stretch north of Glstenbury Mtn, but this is a matter of degree, only. A few blowdowns - mostly in the Glastenbury Wilderness, so herd paths are developing. Entire trail well-marked, brushed out, etc.

A rain hat was enough for the brief showers on Monday afternoon. Method of dealing with mosquitoes: helpful.

Hiked in from Rte 9 expecting to stay at Goddard Leanto - very well-appointed shelter! But we got there by noon and hiked on. (The library at Goddard Shelter consisted of Ayn Rand's: Atlas Shrugged, so there was possible reading late into the night.) At Kid Gore we took a half-hour break and thought we might be bored staying there from 2 pm. We got to Story Spring by 5:00 pm - great water source, good company. We were the 3rd and 4th of an eventual 7 who stayed there - 6 in the shelter, one in a hammock. It would have been easy to finish the hike to Kelley Stand on Monday, but driving home 4 hours to the Kingdom would have involved a stay in a motel - cheaper to stay at Story Spring. Back to the car after breakfast, and home by noon. This completed our section-hike of the LT.
