Trails: AT from Rangeley to Caribou Valley Road

Conditions and comments: Man, was it windy atop Saddleback, the Horn and Saddleback Junior on Sunday! We were being buffeted around like crazy. This was our remaining 24 miles before we start our last section of the AT this coming Sunday - the 100 mile Wilderness and Katahdin. Woohoo!

Although we knew the remnants of Hanna were in the area, we didn't hear any stories on the weather about total destruction up north, so we decided to go for it. It was actually kind of cool (literally and figuratively!) to be atop the ridge during the wind. Crazy! We did see a few other hikers out there so we weren't the only nutty ones :D

We ended up staying at a great campsite near an old road by Orbeton Stream. We had to ford Orbeton Stream, which was deep and cold at the end of the day, but otherwise, our feet stayed really dry the whole day and our boots may have come out cleaner than when they started the trip!

By Monday, the skies had cleared and although it was still pretty chilly, it was a good day for hiking. The descent off Sugarloaf down to Caribou Valley Road is steep, and full of jagged rocks. It took a while, but while on the slide, we did get to see some nice views into the valley.

The woods were nice and green, with hints of red from the bunchberries. Saw two gray jays near Spaulding as well as a few chickadees and juncos.

All in all, a good hike.
