Date of Hike: 03/06/2010

Trail Conditions: somewhat muddy and wet, with a little remaining ice in spots.

Special Equipment Required: decent boots; barebootable now but light traction is advisable when there is more ice, especially if wet; binoculars are essential to make the seal viewing worthwhile

Comments: this is a great place to look for wintering seals, especially between December and mid-April. Consult a tide chart to find a low tide during the day (Newport tide info is fine). Free parking for the John H. Chafee Nature Preserve at Rome Point in North Kingstown is located on Route 1A about half a mile north of Route 138. Follow the main path straight to the beach. Turn left at the beach, and walk along the beach to Rome Point, a narrow spit of land. The seal rocks are off the shore. You can see the seals well with binoculars, but you would barely see them otherwise. The walk is only about 2 miles long round trip.
