The preferred method to obtain a user name on VFTT is to be sponsored by an existing member. That existing member should supply the following information as an e-mail to membership@vftt.org. It would be helpful if the sponsoring member could check the membership list to make sure the requested user name is not already in use as a collision will delay processing.
New User's Real Name: Requested User Name: New User's email address: Sponsor's User Name:
Here are some easy ways to find a sponsor:
If you do not know anyone to sponsor you, and you cannot attend an event from Trips and Events to meet people, you can still apply using the process above, but instead of "Sponsor's name", please write 2-3 sentences about yourself and the reason why you wish to become a member of VFTT. If you have a blog, or hiking picture site, or any other backcountry online presence, a link to that will suffice.
We do not want to deny membership for legitimate backcountry enthusiasts but we do want to prevent spammers and people with too much time on their hands from registering.
Finally, note that moderation is a volunteer position, and we try our best to handle all membership requests within a week's time. If you find that more than a week has gone by, try again, and cc the address in the Contact Us menu item in the page footer. It is always possible that your request got caught in a spam filter.
