  • Hi Steve

Yes, that was me at garfield trailhead on the day Marc finished his winter ss list.. While I was with an AMC group I was not the leader.. Interestingly enough I took the NH AMC winter leadership course at Cardigan MT the previous october.. I currently lead trips for friends and the OTHH hiking group..I figured it was time to expand horizons, check out the AMC, and ..see if we were on the same page..had I been doing the right things..and B, to see if they were interested in me.. The weekend session wasa totally rewarding experience..both in people met and in the general brainstorming that we did..made some good friends... I was strongly encouraged to participate and have made that commitment to move towards that goal.. The funny things is..to that point i had NEVER hiked an AMC led hike...one of the things you have to do is hike with 5 different leaders on hikes and then start the mentoring process...all good..thoiugh..at this point I have done 3 of the "Leader" hikes..My experiences with the hikes so far have been positive..good folks..good times..so far there have not been any people with whom I would not care to hike with. I understand what you are saying..it is different when, as leader, you take phone calls and fill up the hike..doing your best to screen folks and get a good solid team..with my OTHH groups..we do minimal screening..pretty much know each other and move on from there.. I have been on several VFTT hikes as well..hiker expertise is high..people know what they are in for...

if anything came out of the sessions as being the most important thing..it was screening...finding out who was going to fit into the group over the phone rather than finding out on the trailhead..not a perfect science for sure..I think that with a few questions you can tell is someone is a winter hiker and knows what is expected from them..almost harder to determine in late summer or fall where weather can be more uncertain..

I consider the insurance thing a minor nuisance..sighing a sheet for emergency contacts kind of makes sense....

I find now, after taking the AMC course I am more cautious when leading other trips or even going out solo..not a bad thing i guess..I also find that as a leader of a winter trip..take charge,,people get a gear list from me the night before and emergency group gear is split up and not left behing..

any way..I would be interested in talking to you more about this if you want..I would encourage you to do it...
